Title: the taking of Pelham 123
Post by: danny_galaga on May 14, 2009, 05:37:04 am

I'm quite excited about this movie. I've read the book, and seen the original movie (i think it starred Karl Moulden). I think Travolta will make a great hijacker (",)

I would hope so, considering he has played this same part no less than 150002893754 times.

I was thinking the same thing... this is exactly like his roles in:

Wild Hogs
Hairspray
Ladder 49
Phenomenon
Michael
Primary Colors
Look Who's Talking
etc...

the main role i could think of where he hijacked something was 'broken arrow', but he wasnt holding people hostage in that...

anyway, this should be a cool movie.

The main one I was thinking of was Swordfish. I guess he hasn't been the evil terrorist as many times as I thought.  ;)

Though that one role had enough suckiness to equal 20 movies in my defense.

That list would definitely typecast him as an actor in ---smurfy--- movies, though I didn't realize he'd been in 150002893754 of them.  ;D

Well, that and the fact that it's already been out for 35 years.

well, you could say the same for Cape Fear, but that didn't stop it being a great film...

Yes he has.

Face Off, Pulp Fiction, Battle Field Earth...

Even the ones where he isn't, he's more or less playing "what if" scenarios for Vinnie Barbarino after H.S.

Wild Hogs - Vinnie Barbarino goes to business school and longs to relive the Sweat Hog days
Look Who's Talking- Vinnie Barbarino drives a cab and meets a single mom
Ladder 49 - Vinnie Barbarino becomes a fireman
Michael - Vinnie Barbarino has to walk the earth as a guardian angel after he died in knife fight against his old gang The T-Birds.

Ha! I never looked at it like that. Pulp Fiction fits in there too. Did you come up with this on your own, or is there a hilarious Travolta website out there I don't know about?

There's a website for everything, but as far as I know your reply is what got me thinking about it.

I started writing a reply saying that he has the same bad boy persona and as I was writing that he played the exact same character in Welcome Back and Grease, the whole Vinnie Barbarino thing became clear, so I rewrote my reply with that theme.

I tell you, your theory has the beginnings of a youtube hit with the right editing.

Wasn't he a good guy in Face Off? Nicholas Cage was the bad guy.

Travolta was actually suppose to be playing both characters, but I understand why you were confused.

Nicholas Cage on the other hand did a great job.
I read somewhere that he watched hours and hours of Welcome Back Cotter to get into both parts.

Vinnie Barbarino if he joined the FBI
Vinnie Barbarino if the Sweat Hogs became huge cartel.

I saw it once years ago and barely remember it. I just remember seeing the title and thinking Nicholas Cage was perfect, since his face actually appears to be sliding off his skull.  ;D

Well, the most pointless viewing experience because you know what's going to happen has got to be "Flight of the Phoenix" - both versions.

It's about a plane that crashes out in the middle of nowhere....

Do they get out?!?

Who knows - watch the movie!

...

Oh wait, it's called "Flight of the Phoenix" so we already know they get out.  Ho hum.

Well, now you really are showing a lack of understanding of a good story. The original 'Flight of the Phoenix' is bloody great! And the remake was ok too. It really doesn't matter if you think you know how a story ends, it's in the telling. Or do you only like stories that are totally nonsensical?Do you only watch Ingmar Bergmann movies or something?

edit: just noticed that you liked Angels and Demons. Nuff said...

Oh, it was okay - the story was totally preposterous but the acting was decent and the settings were neat.

Oh wait, are we discussing Angels & Demons or Flight of the Phoenix?

Moran.

Ok, just saw it tonight as i happened to be walking past the cinema, almost forgot about it! I'd give it a 3.5/5. Solid performances, but early on you understand the 'bigger picture' of the hijack, which i think could have been hidden longer. The thing that irked me a bit is Travoltas character having the background he has isn't conducive (in my mind) to being a ringleader of hardened criminals. In the original book, that character is an ex green beret or something...

Funny, when i was in NYC in 2003, i think i saw the Pelham line in the subway and thought i'd jump on it just for laughs. Of course it probably goes to the middle of nowhere, where'd i'd get jumped and have to walk home or summink! So i didn't jump on it...

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me

4/5 - Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!
