Title: DVI to HDMI Connection for PC
Post by: 97thruhiker on May 04, 2009, 06:57:14 pm
Is anyone here running their PC through a DVI to HDMI connection?  I'm looking at a monitor that only has one vga and hdmi conection.  As per a previous thread I had on here I want to run two computers on this monitor (A pc I built two months ago and a mac mini).  If I got this monitor I would most likey run the pc through the dvi to hdmi connection while I will run the Mac through the VGA.  Are there any issues that I should be aware of running the computer through the hdmi?  I'm not using it as a htpc, just gaming and internet.  My pc runs 32bit Vista Home Premium and a XFX 9800GT video card if that makes a difference.  Thanks for any advise / information you may have.

I forgot to mention the monitor I was looking at.

I got to play around with one at the store and really liked the picture.

DVI and HDMI are interchangeable if you're only dealing with video.  My PC output goes from DVI to HDMI, through an HDMI 3-input switch, and then from HDMI to DVI to drive my monitor.  It works fine all the way up to the max resolution of the monitor at 1920x1200.

Get your HDMI-DVI cables from monoprice.com or somewhere else that sells them for $5 or less.  Anything over $10 is robbery.

Newegg has some decent prices on dvi cables(and HDMI cables, and DVI to HDMI cables).  If you're ordering the monitor there anyways might as well just throw in a cable too.

And yeah, DVI and HDMI are interchangeable, unless you need the HDMI cable to carry audio over as well.  I have a cable that I bought(originally to hook a pc up to my HDTV, but never got around to it) that I've used for a few different things.  Including hooking up my PS3(HDMI) to my computer monitor(DVI).  Definitely a good cable to have on hand if you have any HDMI devices and any DVI devices.  Will come in handy.

I'm running a DVI to VGA adapter, but I don't know if that's ideal and gives me all possible resolutions. My tv seems real finicky about what I can send to it via PC.

So true of the "robbery" comment. I was shopping for cables and adapters. One store selling DVI to HDMI adapter and cables would have set me back almost $200. Ridiculous. They wanted $40 for a DVI to VGA adapter just like the one that came FREE with my ATI video card. UGH

Monoprice seems to have the best deals on all that stuff.
