hey guys, i searched the forums and found a few threads, and after a good bit of reading, i havent been able to come up with a good answer.
I know there has been progress made for using the wiimote as a lightgun in mame. I have messed with it about a year ago and got it to the point where it was controlling my mouse cursor on my pc, but not so well as a lightgun in mame..plus mame wouldn't recognize the buttons being pressed. so i have a few questions.
Has anyone successfully got a wiimote to function as a lightgun in mame, using the IR functionality and the wiimote buttons to shoot?
is there a way to make the wiimote automatically pair up to the PC when it is turned on? I turn my cabinet off every night, and it boots up with MALA as teh shell. it is a real pain in the butt to have to exit mala, launch explorer and pair up the wiimote every time i want to use them. that is not a viable option.
i bought an extra sensor bar for $6 when circuit city was going out of business, and i thought about adding it to my cabinet..but unless i can automate the bluetooth pairing and get mame to use it as an IR lightgun, there is just no point
so, can this be done...and if so, how?

I've been researching the same idea for a while now. Other than the ubiquitous GlovePie scripts floating around, I haven't had much success either.
Definitely not with the auto pair functionality. It appears to be VERY stack dependent, with the going sentiment that BlueSoliel is the best for that, though I even had problems with that stack.
Apparently, there IS something transmitted from the wiimote when you press a button, but the pc has to be listening for it and, generally speaking, PC stacks don't.
But, if you find anything different, please post!

I gave if a fair shot, but ultimately, the wiimote is a pretty poor substitute for a light gun. The biggest problem is the aiming: the wiimote doesn't offer the accuracy needed to play without reticules. However, when you play with reticules turned on, most light gun games become very easy to play, which isn't much fun at all.

I didn't like House of the Dead: Overkill and that's using the Wiimote proper, so I don't think I'd care for the hack.

yeah, i know it isn't as good as a real lightgun...but i have an LCD monitor in my cabinet...and it doesn't have the necessary depth to fit a CRT monitor, Nor to i have the room for a second cabinet with a crt monitor..so i don't have alot of options.

i have house of the dead 2 and 3 for the wii, and while maybe not as good as having a proper lightgun, it was still fun. i'd really like to be able to play some gun games. i used to have a cabinet with a tv and a ps2 in it that i used for gun games, but i dont have the room for it in my new house, so it had to go away. i still have the TV, but it is mainly used by my 2 year old to watch movies.
all of my game consoles are connected to my DLP Projector, so i can't use lightguns with that either. i've been itching to play some gun games, but just dont have the space required for another cabinet.

Ever thought of hacking one of these into a light gun ? http://www.gyration.com/p-14-go-24ghz-optical-air-mouse.aspx Seems to me it would be the equivalent of a wii mote hack. I have one of these that I play mame light gun games with and I own a Wii and I can tell you they are about the same as far as game play goes. As Custardo says, the Wii as well as this is horrible for spot on aiming, but Aliens the gun and operation Wolf/ Thunderbolt works well with it.
