I would really like to know how.
-
To shorten a link:
daywane's link
Then it will appear like this:
daywane's link (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=90009.0)
-
I like to put another bracket at both ends of the tag to make the link stand out more. I find that its easy to miss a link especially if you are skimming over a post or if the link isnt pointed out.
[daywane's link]
Then gives:
[daywane's link (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=90009.0)]
I know alot of forums have a BBC tag button with the rest of the other BBC tags (Bold, IMG, Youtube Vid etc). Maybe, if possible, it would be a good idea to add this to the tags for people who dont know how to shorten links?
-
I also like to underline the link:
daywane's link
gives:
daywane's link (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=90009.0)
-
way to complicate it guys! dawayne. i have lots of trouble with this too, but i can do it without looking for an old post now. just use jonthebombs example. thats all you need to know. to get a clearer idea, click the quote button on jonthebombs reply. so right now, before you click you can see where he says:
then it will appear like this:
daywaynes link
when you click quote you will see how the code looks to say 'dawaynes link (it will be the same as his sample code, but not in a grey box)
-
I highlight the words I want the link to be and click the third button to the right of the you tube button and then just add an = and the link next to the first url. I am not sure if anyone actually types it but I figured I would mention it just in case. So it would be like this...
My link
Highlight that and click the url button so it looks like this...
My link
Then add an = sign and paste the link...
My link
Piece of cake.

Hit the url button, which gives this:
(url)(/url)
Now put an equals sign after the first 'url':
(url=)(/url)
Now type your hyperlink after the equals sign:
(url=www.byoac.com)(/url)
Now type what you want to show on the screen in between the two bracketed url sections:
(url=www.byoac.com)Arcade Controls(/url)
It will look like this:
Arcade Controls (http://www.byoac.com)

^ nice

Maybe this should be stickied, since the question will come up forever. There is no way to know how to do that without asking someone else on here.

That's nice and all, but the descriptive link option should be the default option. Just typing a url results in a hyperlink, so why would anyone hit a button to do that?
-
A lot of forums do that - when you hit the URL button it pops up a javascript dialog that asks you the url and the link text. Personally I like it better this way as it presents a whole lot less cross browser issues.

I see the problem of showing how it is done.
explorer hides most of the stuff.
next time some one asks this question I will send them a PM with docs.
:notworthy: :notworthy: thanks

And download a decent browser like Firefox or Safari 4 instead of explorer.
There are forums that automatically shorten the links. The old KLOV forum even had that (despite it's many drawbacks). Not sure if the new version still does it.
Anyway, should be done in the background. Yes I am lazy.
-
Same here, shmokes...a question with what should be a couple posts to answer it at maximum is up to 20 posts. 21 with my observation.
-
What about this (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+shorten+links)?
