Title: Mortal Kombat 4
Post by: Marky_1979 on February 23, 2009, 03:51:34 pm
Does Mortal Kombat 4 work on Mame? im using version 128 and although it loads up it is extremely slow and clearly not 100% is this a mame version issue or is my computer not good enough?

I can't give the official word on this, however I can tell you that I recently set up an arcade machine and am running 128 as well and I have the same problems.   I have a very decent machine in mine too and it still lags out.  So I am inclined to say that emaulation of MK4 isn't quite right yet.

I don't know from experience, but I thought I read somewhere that you need close to a 4GHz machine to run MK4 properly.  I've also heard that the 64-bit version of MAME gives the best performance for the hard to run games.

I OC'd my computer to 3.2 GHz and cannot run MK4, Cruis'n'USA, etc.  NEED MORE POWER!   MUUAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAAAAAA!! >:D

Don't know what your specs are, but I have a feeling because of the way MAME is built to accurately emulate the machines, it's a processing power issue.

Not sure what my spec is to be honest how would I find out?

When I said specs, I was referring to how fast your processor in your computer is.  I'm not the most computer savvy, but in XP, click on Start, then right click on My Computer, and choose Properties.  It should list your computer's specs.

I would recommend emulating the PSX for MK4, or even getting your hands on MK Gold for the Dreamcast and going that route (though Gold isnt exactly MK4...).

You will have an easier time that way then getting Mame to crunch it out.

I run MK4 without issue.  Core2Duo here running .129u3 on Windows XP x64...

I can say for sure MK4 worked in .129u2 as well.  I can't remember if it worked prior.

Anyone know if it works on version 128? if it does then what pc upgrades do you suggest?

You're ass out.  AMD64 CPU's don't have enough gusto to deal with 3d games.  You need a core2duo rig.   No matter what version of MAME you get,  you'll be ass-out playing MK4 and other 3d games (Blitz, Gauntlet Legends, etc) with that AMD64 CPU.  Sucks... I know... I just paid upgraded to Core2Duo from an AMD64 3200+...

What Ghz are you at Frizzle?

I really wanted to get to 3ghz,  but it's just not stable.  I run at 2.7ghz though I can usually do 2.8ghz with very little stability issue.  That said,  the 100mhz makes very little difference.  The biggest improvement I got was going from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows XP 64-bit.  Blitz went from barely playable at about 80% to running 100% 99.9% of the time.

Core2duo?  Shouldn't be a problem at all.

I just played a few games of MK4.   There are still some graphical glitches.  The damage bar doesn't work.  I noticed Sub-Zero's Ice and frozen smoke isn't appearing with transparent backgrounds, etc.  The game is otherwise playable.  Still needs work though.

Yeah Core2Duo.  MK4 worked fine besides the emulation bugs, speed was not an issue in the slightest.

My Blitz isnt running at 100% though, the gameplay would be alright, but the sound is especially choppy.  What version are you running and do you do any special settings to get it running smoother?

I forget which Mame I'm using, I think its like .124 64bit build.

Strange,  at 3.2ghz you should be silky smooth.  I am just running Windows Xp x64... have run MAME .128 to .129u3 and it all play fine.   I AM running it in standard res mode (see DIP SWITCHES)... perhaps you're trying to run in high res mode?

The only slowdown I get is the audio hiccups slightly when the "shield" screen comes on just before going to "gameplay mode".   I can even play Blitz 99 and Blitz 2000 without issue.
