Title: Coraline 3D
Post by: shmokes on February 13, 2009, 12:44:44 am
. . . is ---smurfing--- AWESOME!  Just utterly amazing from the first to the last second.

It's also pretty disturbing.  Don't take your 6-year-old to it.  :D

The 3D effects are fantastic.  Unless it's just not at all possible, see it in 3D.

Yeah, what he said. I very much enjoyed it. Probably too scary for little kids who are easily frightened. My 5 year old took it in stride though he lives in a house with dragons and a yearly haunted house so... I told my friends not to take their 7 year old...

The scene with the two old ladies in the circus had me looking at my wife briefly wondering what the hell we had brought our young kids to!

I can't say anything for myself (haven't seen it) but my 16 year old daughter gave it rave reviews after seeing it.

I loved the fact that the 3D wasn't used as a gimmick for the most part. It really added a level of depth I'd never seen (though this was my first RealD experience). Screw the old red/blue 3D, I really look forward to watching more RealD movies! (Especially "Up" and the 3D releases of Toy Story and Toy Story 2)

Do they use disposable glasses or are they re-used for each showing?

Maybe there's an option to buy them as well?

I've kept a few pairs the first time, but they give you new ones every time. I was hoping they could waive the extra fee if i reused my own glasses, but no dice.

I've been looking forward to this movie since  I saw a preview at Bolt3D. I'm still pissed I missed Nightmare Before Christmas 3D.

I kept mine. They are the RealD black frame plastic ones. I know that you're actually paying for the 3D projection more than the glasses, but I still paid extra, so they're mine. ;D

I'm glad its turning out to be good. I was worried that Nightmare before Christmas merch sales had slumped enough at Hot Topic causing a need for a new "dark puppet" movie to be released, thus filling the void.

:laugh2: Ain't that the truth.

Id been thinking of seeing this for a while... and finally went tonight.

 Awesome.

Great 3D, cool movie.  Not too childish nor too corny.

I was hesitant... because the Imax 3D wasnt playing it.   Instead, one of the standard
theaters were.   I didnt think they could replicate the depths that Imax could.

Well, I was right.   Imax in 3D is 10 times more depth.  Imax 3d images come within
like 3 ft of you.. and you really feel surrounded.    This time, the images were most in
the screen... and the pop-out effect was very limited comparatively.

Even so... it was still excellent.   Just not stellar - as would be in Imax3d.

I sat in the the exact middle of the theater.  And after the end credits started to roll...
I decided to see the effect from the 3rd row seats.   I was right...  The effect was
amplified.  I should have known.  :(    So, if you want the best effect..  sit closer to the
screen.

With Imax... the screen is twice as big as a typical screen.. and the seating is more
vertical... which means that everyone is much closer to the screen.   The larger
screen allows the images to get much closer to you.  The larger screen also allows
much more clarity in the images as well.

Id seen Polar Express in Imax 3D,  and it really Rocked.  I was extremely disappointed
that Imax didnt show it again on the holidays.  I would easily see it every year in Imax3d.
I think other would too.

Im very happy that this type of 3D is finally becoming mainstream.   Its still so sad that
most movies are still filmed in 2d.  A movie like Harry Potter or Aliens would be
incredible if shot in full 3d.  (Yes, I did see the 'computer converted' sections of Harry
Potter & Superman  in 3d... but its horrible compared to a film being shot with 2 cameras)

If you think this stuff is cool.. you gota grab a pair of LCD shutter glasses for your
PC, and play some games in 3d.   Its a huge difference in experience.  Very wicked
indeed.

Finally... if you are patient enough to wait for the final credits of the movie to
end... there is a tiny bit more 3d animation at the end.  Nothing that spectacular...
but cool to see anyways  :)

Great movie, the 3d was excellent. The visual candy was on supreme display. As usual with these new 3d movies, motion does not work well at all, but the still to somewhat slow/still stuff is excellent in the depth.

And yes Saint, that scene you mentioned was really f'ed up!!!! :laugh2: :laugh2:

While this was an excellent movie, I still like Nightmare Before Christmas better - the singing makes all the difference I think. I kept thinking thru the whole movie that they needed to be singing.

One of the biggest problems with todays digital theaters... is response times.
Much like LCDs, (which is probably what they are using for projection)... when
action is fast,  you will notice a blur effect.   I cant believe that they let such
crap take over the standard film projectors, until the problem was sorted  :(

In 3d, this lag makes things even worse.

However, as you have said, there are just some things that didnt seem to work
right, even when slow.  One has to wonder if this has to do with an individuals eye
spacing. Or it could have been a problem to do with chosen focus.  Hard to say.

I have to say that I liked this a lot more than Nightmare.  Nightmare was a bit
cheezy... and I honestly cant take a whole movie worth of singing.  That would have
ruined the creation Imop.

Some how when I was a kid I had little problem with singing disney movies... yet
now.. I can barely stomach them.

I HATED them as a kid, but LOVE them now.  ;D

Best example is Winnie the Pooh. I couldn't stand that crap as a kid - it was a waste of valuable Saturday morning cartoon time. Then a few years ago I played Kingdom Hearts, and now I absolutely love Winnie the Pooh.

Well let's put it this way, the visuals in this movie were way better than Nightmare. For story and music, Nightmare is way better.

Finally saw it. It was great. So glad they didn't launch into song.

The best part? 3D trailers for Monsters And Aliens, and Up
