I have put mine straight in one of my cabs, without taking off the case. Luckily, it just fitted in place of the old monitor.

In my first cab using the Ultimate Arcade II design, I put a 27" SDTV straight in. The design provides for a platform on which to set the TV. I built up a couple of 3/4" MDF pieces behind the TV to keep it from sliding backwards. I then taped the outline of the screen on a piece of plex and spray painted it black to hide the TV case. The TV fit really well in that cab design.

Ooooo, need to change the aspect for vertical games so's they don't look like terrible 80s console ports.

Yeah, the family didn't like having the blank space on the sides of the screen. I'll have it my way on the next cab  ;D

I have family like that, who get quite annoyed when there are old or american TV shows on and there is the pillarboxing on the side of the screen. They prefer it with fat-o-vision.
