one day i might get into muzzle loading guns. you know, black powder and all that. theres just something so 'piratey' about them. and it satisfies that boyish urge to shoot ---Cleveland steamer---, but without the stigma some of the gun nuts portray.
anyway, i came across this the other day in a magazine:

i told a guy at work about it who is one of those gun nuts. even he was amazed. he explained the arcane origin of the size to me, which also explains shot gun sizes i believe. that is, the number is how many lead balls to a pound. the diameter of that ball naturally is the bore size. therefore, a 2 bore (which is in fact a cannon size!) can take a 1/2 pound (whats that, about 225 grams?) ball! this isnt muzzle loaded though, it takes a custom made cartridge with a more modern projectile. in the magazine they showed a recovered round, which of course was quite mashed up. as they said 'there's nothing that thing wont stop'. provided you hit it of course ;D
the gun smith is taking orders. the bore is a fraction over one inch by the way...

I would like to see you say that after shooting it 2 or 3 times. The recoil looks painful. Hell, a 12 gauge shotgun with a #2 shot and a wooden stock feels like someone punched you in the shoulder as hard as they could. Look at how far they are leaning into the shot. I bet that thing would leave bruises or some nice red marks on you, even with the leather protecting you.

I can shoot a 12 gauge all day no problem.
2 or 3 shots from that thing would be no problem. Couple of them looked like they never shot anything before.

i dont know about how well you could take the recoil. but those guys shooting are serious shooters.
they certainly seemed pretty quiet after shooting though, didnt they ;D
the gunsmith isnt going to let just anyone play with that toy! check out these cartridges!

"Yes, there is a currently-made 2-bore rifle, which I have made for the Royal Armouries as an exhibition piece. It fires 3,500-grain slugs with twenty or twenty-four drams of powder, and can be seen in action on the website of the Shooting Times magazine in England. Cartridges are one hundred dollars each, and the price of the rifle will be governed mainly by the features desired, but will be measured in the tens of thousands of dollars. Using the famous Taylor Knockout values, which give a much better indication of killing power than just kinetic energy, the.600 gives 161, but the 2-bore gives over 700, so it is effectively like firing four .600s simultaneously."
i suspect it is a gun for the 'stouter' collector...

I can take 1,000 small punches in the shoulder on any given weekend. I'm a recoil junkie. Believe me when I say two big punches would be no problem.
Apologies in advance for the amateur CP... Its an old pic and has been fixed. ;D
