Title: Mamey Awards
Post by: SavannahLion on December 16, 2008, 01:13:17 pm
While researching, I was led to the Mamey Awards. while looking around, I realized there seemed too few Mameys from what I remember last I visited.

I was pretty certain there are more past Mamey award winners than what's listed there. Do the site ops drop off old winners as new ones cycle in? I know Knieval has a few spots on that list but I was pretty sure he had more than just what I saw.

Am I just remembering the site wrong?  ??? It would be nice to look at previous winners, no matter how old.

I just checked and all 3 of Knievel's wins that I remember are there, as are some of the older winners like UncleT and danny_galaga.

I never found the Mamey's very respectfull. I get a feeling if it is done by some teenagers. Especially when you see some winners on the Crapmame site too (which is totally right). You're better off with the Wiki hall of fame.

Who would say such a thing ?  ???

Not respectful ?   ::)

I can't imagine that anybody would pick on those upstanding, longtime members of our community that way, unless they were looking for a rubber fist ...

The only one off the top of my head is Unclet's cabinet. I don't remember if cardboard one is on CrapMAME.

The Wiki Hall of Fame seems to be falling apart... yet again. Not only are links broken to the original site, some of the Wayback links are borked too. It's a decent resource none-the-less.

In any case, I was looking for a specific set of ideas. The Mamey site sported one of the cabinet ideas I was after.

As in, how much work it takes to get a piece of crap to mint or an award for how mint mint is?

I think one or more of the mamey judges aren't impartial. I forget which one(s). And he/they didn't hide their preferences. The issue is said preferences had a hand in guiding  judgement of the entries.

I personally think that 4 out of the 5 Mamey JudgesTM are complete jerks.  I mean, you have a republican, a redneck, a recluse, and an asian monster  on the panel. Of the five I can only think of one who is cool, kindhearted, mature and more or less a genius.

Personally, I think that the cabinet you submitted with the 9 foot control panel and blue t-molding should have won hands down, but what can you expect from that unruly bunch!

Oh, and I have it under good advice that yes, they are all barely teenagers.

Yeah, one of the first things I noticed. In the comments on one of the cocktails I think and again on one of the bar tops.

Given how the site is designed, judging, etc. I really wouldn't expect the judges to be completely impartial. There really isn't any clear cut guidelines on what wins or what the qualifications are. Take the leaf switches. As nice as the switches are, I would've slotted them under a different award rather assigning a Mamey. Looking through the Mamey, it leaves one with the impression it is intended for full blown cabinets and other DIY projects rather than the components that make those projects up.

But hey, I don't do the awards. As long as the information I seek is there, what do I care? Oh... wait... the information I sought wasn't there, the damn project site no longer exists.

Agreed, I think we should boycott the Mameys.  That'll show em.  Hit them in the bank account and they'll toe the company line.

What I think they need is 23 random real-world judges.  That way there's a real consensus, instead of 5 people from "the community".  I mean, when a guy makes a killer, 55 button control panel (complete with "o" and "k" buttons), he should have a fair run at it.  People in "the community" are obviously going to call it a monstrosity and ridicule it, but hey, you get a couple of 19 year old paint sniffing freaks on the judging panel, and man...those guys will LOVE it!  Same goes for chopping up a useless starwars cockpit cabinet to make a stand-up "MAME-O-MASTIC" arcade unit (complete with light up trackball!).  The judges they have would DEFINITELY poo-poo that, but if you got a 45 year old crack-whore, well she could sell the parts off the start wars cab for good cash (for crack) on ebay!

I say we start a petition: MORE CRACK-WHORES ON THE MAMEY PANEL!!!!!!

You're bang on the mark.  These clowns will have to go back to their day jobs and give up their cushy Mamey-judge jobs fo sho'.

1.  Who knew Zakk was a Republican?
2.  I'm blushing! :w00t :-*

That could be me.  I really have no idea who you're talking about, because you're speaking in generalities, which is why I believe you might be talking about me.  People tend to want to not ruffle the feathers of other people, whereas I like to tell someone why I like their project, or why I think it's an utter pile of crap.  If that adds up to "partiality", meh.  I call's 'em likes I sees 'em.  Some folks apparently want that (unless/until the results don't agree with their personal view ;D )

If I weren't dead sexy and modest to boot, it might bother me. :afro:

==================================

Y'know what we should try, Zakk?  Let's try the new model of approval for everyone.  Everyone gets a ribbon, even if their project wouldn't be useful as firewood, and let's mark everyone's submission in purple ink, so nobody's feelings are hurt.  I'll be expecting my royalty check for this idea shortly.  Details can be worked out over tequila's and a good soak.

's funny, but people who submit their project for "judging" and "approval" of some "stupid award" always seem to be the most bitter when they're not given recognition from the people they then proceed to badmouth over being slighted in such a fashion.  Really, if we (and by we, I mean you other 4 Zakk mentioned above) were such 'tards, why didja submit your project to US, of all people?

=========================================

Oh, and for those who would defend or try to make a point to me about how wrong I am, please, please don't judge the tone of my post or how I presented it.  You might hurt my feelings, and it RRREEEEAAAAAALLLLLLLY matters to me what others think of me, and I want be awarded a "Smilin' Kangaroo" for getting along with everyone!  BE HAPPIER!

No cabinet left behind!

Sounds good to me, but those crack whores probably won't go for it.

oh boy oh boy, let's see.. one cabinet wins, 30 copy cats come along and say "hey what about me?"  please.

You know why there have been no new Mameys? There has been no new innovation, cabinets that look promising, never get updated or completed enough to get voted on, while the attention whores who slapped something together copying someone else's design piss and moan that they didn't make the cut...

That or I'm too busy reading my driver's ed manual to notice, can't wait... learners permit next month, maybe mom will let me take out the Buick....

Hey, I just started this thread because I thought some of the Mamey's dropped off, not because there are so few or new ones.

Whatever, the judges can come in, criticize the criticism. That's within their rights.  :-* Hell, everyone can get together and have one big cluster ---fudgesicle--- for all that it matters. None of that is where the real value is.

Hey... have fun.  Take the criticism or leave it. :cheers:

To answer your question, I do recall that I did a bit of a hair and makeup change to the site at one point, and did just drop off a couple of the past winners inadvertently.  I think it was a "ooops...oh well" moment.  Nothing malicious.

Several of the home pages for projects in the hall of fame are gone.  :cry: I deleted the dead links from the wiki.

IMO Mountain's jukebox project should go to the hall of fame, but I think Saint has put a moratorium on adding new entries due to the squabbling over who gets in and who doesn't.

I never even played that game and know next to nothing about it - but I thought it was pretty cool. OKAY, IT WAS PURPLE - I'm just a little biased.
