Title: Which frontend for 1920x1200 resolution
Post by: Blanka on October 27, 2008, 02:18:45 am
Which frontend runs best in 1920x1200? I want to have all graphics/text in 1:1 pixel mapping.

How are the emulators doing at this resolution? Are there emulators that don't support blocky full 1920x1200 rendering?

AtomicFe should work in that resolution. But i don't have layout done for that, you will have to do your own.

But i think  Hyperspin should be very nice on this kind of resolution.

Khameleon also should be good.

Mala , i think too.

GameEX and Maximus i think too, but they are not free.

Very few frontends have skins that are truly resolution-independent. I can only think of two. Dragon King and Khameleon.

That said, of course many frontends will run at 1920 by 1200. Youki mentioned Hyperspin. HS should run at 1920x1200 without changing any themes, all you have to do is change the resolution in the configuration file. The HS themes are composed at 1024x768 and the background images are supposed to be 1024x768. What I don't know is how HS handles widescreen.

Mala and Mamewah require separate skin files for each resolution they run in.

Ultrastyle doesn't resize images on the fly.

And so on.

I don't know how emulators do with that resolution. I don't run that resolution myself as I only have one widescreeen monitor and that is my son's machine.

AtomicFe adapts the skin to the resolution automatically.

But it uses strechting . So you can use a 640x480 in 1920x1200... but you will obtain something very blocky...  I don't think it is what you want.

I've found that with Mala chokes when setting screenshots to scale up to such a high resolution, and so I've had to run Mala at say 800x600 even though my monitor is much higher, or else I couldn't scroll through lists very well.  While I love me some Mala and use it myself, I might look into seeing how other FE's manage image scaling first.

I have MaLa at 1024x768 and don't have issues.

youki, I think he does want blocky - as in very defined.

Not true.  Can't speak for Mamewah but MaLa can run in free aspect, or any aspect.  Just depends how the layout was designed.  Obviously, 16:10 looks terrible with layouts designed for 4:3.

I want the FE 1920x1200, and the games as blocky as possible. So 5x5 pixels for pacman.

(http://the games as blocky as possible)

You mean when the game run?   Just force mame resolution to  320x200 for all games. They will be all extremly blocky on your  1920x1200 screen.

Not exactly. Or rather, I get hardware scanlines because it really runs at some variant (read: refresh) of 720x480, plus there's overscan. If I check 'stretch to fit' it fits the screen but is really distorted. If I'm running hi-res, I leave it stock or I might enable 'RGBsharp' or set the prescale at 2 (depending on which era of mame used).

I run AtomicFE fine on my test rig at 1680x1050, and my Mame cab runs 1400x1050 just fine.

No old games use so high resoulution as 1680x1050, so I can see no reason why to pimb these games so high, so I think you should just use the half resolution for these games. It just "cost" cpu and/or gpu time for absolute no reason.

MultiFE can upscale to any resolutions with 1x1 pixel text and the baground is designed you really cant see it is upscaled (Apart from the coverarts of course), but it faw while ago I updated it, but I still work on it to get command line emulators to work (hence why I diddent update the MultiFE thread) aprt a very bug fixed releasese of the jukebox part.

Mamewah and Mala as minimum should not have any problems if you have 1680x1050 artwork, but these skins is not designed on these resolutions.

I have Half Life 2 on my cab, among other new games, so that is why I have the resolution up to where the computer and LCD monitor can handle it. The reason I have it there is so that the screen doesn't switch resolutions when it leaves the front end to fire up a game. As far as cpu cost - not an issue, I've got plenty to spare. I don't have any stutter and everything runs smooth.

Besides - have you ever seen an LCD that is not running in it's native resolution? Looks like crap...

I have never have problems with up-scaling on my LCD'S and I have couple of them, as long you use a 4:3 resolutions on a 4:3 LCD (or 5:4 which is so close as I could not see so much difference) and 16:9 resolution on a 16:9 LD. i sometimes see a 4:3 is used as a native resolution on a 16:9 screen which I do sent like, which they might have up-scaling problems and these resolution is wrong.

1920x1200 is a 16:10 resolution, so i guess he have a widescreen and not a 4:3 with a wrong native resolution? otherwise I think most skins is designed on 4:3 and then it look like strected on a widescreen which is not very good.

All major frontends that can show any resolution should of course run in that resolution, but I have not seen a widescreen designed in that resolution, propenty all emulated games use a much lowere resolution.

That is why i have designed my frontend/jukebox to detect screensize format based on the desktop resolution used.

You mean when the game run?  They will be all extremly blocky on your  1920x1200 screen.

That's just what I DO like. And OpenGL scales any emulator to 1920x1200 60fps with 2 fingers in the nose on even the crappiest GMA 950. So that's no hurdle. So absolutely no monitor upscaling, no scanline overlays or what so ever! The computer must output all in 1920x1200 and no resolution switches please. But the front-end design is already made in 1920x1200, so the files are ready to be put into some FE.
