Title: PS3 audio problem
Post by: Cametron on October 07, 2008, 10:18:27 pm
Hoping someone with more smarts than I can help me with this issue.
I have my PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI and the PS3 also connect to my amp via optical.
The audio setup in the PS3 only allows you to select either HDMI, optical or the multi AV cable output.  You cant seem to select multiple audio outputs to be active at the same time.
Is that correct?  And if so, is there a workaround so you can have more than one output active at the same time?
Changing the output settings everytime seems like a pain in the ass.

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers.

If your TV has digital out, you could try sending the audio from the PS3 to the TV and then via digital audio out from the TV to the receiver.

I haven't been able to try this myself since my TV has a coax digital output where the receiver has a digital input. Guess I could get a converter.

It's not really an issue for me though. I simply switch on the home theater set when I play on the PS3 and use that for the audio.

I'd prefer sending the audio over the TV, because then it would always sync up with the image. With these new image correcting TV's the picture can lag quite substantially if you split the sound and image from the source (image comes later due to processing in the TV).

Unfortunately my tv doesn't have audio pass through so that rules that out.
Only reason I want to have both is so I can play PS3/watch Blu Ray without the receiver on when the kids are alseep.  I have no problem doing this with the 360 so I cant see why the PS3 should be any different.
I spoke to a friend who suggested I try the MS branded 360 HDMI cable as it has an optical out built in and can provide audio through HDMI as well as the optical output.
I am gonna pick one up on the weekend and give it a go.

I had a similar problem with analog audio (via the proprietary connector) and digital optical.  AFAIK, the PS3 will not output sound to both simultaneously.  You have to change the option in the menu depending on your mood.  It's a major shortfall, in my opinion.

Fortunately, I upgraded to an HDMI switching receiver so I don't have that problem anymore.
