Title: Is my PCB bad, or is it my capcom classic to JAMMA Adaptor ?
Post by: mrclean on October 06, 2008, 11:25:32 pm
 I hope someone has an idea :banghead: Close but no cigar, OK so I bought the PCB "Gun.Smoke" Along with a brand new JAMMA Harness, and Brand new Capcom Classic to JAMMA Adaptor. So any way the game turns on and functions about 95%, however in *Test Mode* and during game play i have the following issue: I can't seem to have "Fire Right" work.

the game has these buttons:

Buttons:

Shoot Left    -------- Working
Shoot Right --------- Not Working !
Shoot Straight -----  Working

Joy Stick Controls:

UP -------Working
DOWN-- Working
LEFT-----Working
RIGHT---Working

I have already replaced the entire JAMMA Harness thinking it was that, however the new one that i recieved different company and this one is way better in terms of quality but the same issue, I still can't "Fire Right". Is there a solution to this problem or just a matter of process of elimination ? All of the other tests, when i flipped the dipswitch was working with the exception of that input... So is it the PCB ? or is it the JAMMA adaptor ? It's tough to say because 95% of it's working. Oh yeah and only one leaf switch and ground was used to test the inputs on everything, so it has nothing to do with a bad leaf / or ground etc.

The JAMMA harness is just that...a harness.  It's just a connector from your PCB to the buttons.

You could try the simple test methods first...make sure it's not the button!  Not trying to be condescending, but the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) principle has saved my butt more than once.  Here I think it may be something catastrophic, when it's just a button.

Case in point: we sent a boardset out for repair three times because when it was installed in the machine, it wouldn't boot.  Sent to repair, they said it worked fine on the bench.  I finally personally got to look at it and found one of the buttons on the CP was stuck with soda.  Didn't see it earlier because I never thought a stuck button would prevent boot!  Once that was eliminated, the game operated normally.

So once you have eliminated that as a possibility, check your adapter and make sure the trace that is supposed to handle that particular button is doing it's job.  A continuity test with a multimeter should work, I would think.

If it passes that...I'd look at the PCB.

OK well after talking to Tim at jammaboards.com he said that the JAMMA adaptor he sold me for this particular game isn't correctly set up and would need to have jumper wires soddered on the board because it has 3 buttons, unlike all the other capcom classic games which only have 2.

* Ares No Tsubasa - The Legendary Soldiers
* Commando
* Exed Eyes
* Ghost n' Goblins
* Gun Smoke ------ Only 3 button game
* Legendary Wings
* Section Z
* Space Invasion
* Trojan

He is going to send me out the correct adaptor. So 95% chance that's what it is. Again on the bottom of my first post, i used the same button to test all inputs so i know it's not the button.

Peale just ran down the list of usual stuff to check... probably overlooked your comment on the button.

Which is why he also mentioned this:
check your adapter and make sure the trace that is supposed to handle that particular button is doing it's job.

Glad to hear it should be a simple correction to your problem though.  :cheers:
