Title: MAME version question.. worth the upgrade?
Post by: DeLuSioNal29 on September 14, 2008, 10:10:03 pm
Hello all,

I want all of your opinions.  I currently have version .119 of MAME on an AMD X2 4200+ with 2 gb ram and it works great.  Is there any advantage to updating to the latest version of MAME?  What improvements have been made to the newer version that I "can't live without"?

My current version has been customized for and AMD chip and has the "high scores" and "no nag" fixes.  Is it worth it to upgrade?

It seems the biggest recent fixes are sound emulation at the expense of emulation speed, so my opinion is no.
Then again, I'm running .84 and .99 and see no reason to even upgrade to where you are from that.  ;)

If a game you like is emulated better in a newer version then it might be worth upgrading ... no harm in trying, anyway.

I'm contemplating a move from advmame (.106) to a newer version of sdlmame just for the now-correct emulation of Bubble Bobble.

Hmmm... maybe I'll hold off then.  It does everything that I want and more.  .119 even does SFIII (in my opinion) quite perfectly.

Great, thanks!

I'm running 0.118. The only reason I'm thinking of upgrading is for "Speed Buggy" (or "Buggy Boy" as it was called in Europe I think?).  Truthfully, I've not been keeping up with the new supported games so who knows, maybe there's something else supported now that I would like.

It sounds to me like the only real reason to upgrade is to get your favorite game to work.  Until the new ones run NFL Blitz or Gauntlet Legends flawlessly (if ever) I think I'm good with my version for now, since it runs everything that I like already, sans the ones I just mentioned.
