Well I'm at my wit's end with searching for a suitable hinge to open and close my CP. I've bought 3 different sets of hinges and they all don't work so I'm putting out a call for any suggestions....I mean it's a standard Lusid design CP so there ought to be someone who got this down, right?
I searched the forum for some ideas but most of the solutions I saw don't seem to apply for various reasons (I based my first purchase on info from a search and it didn't work for me)
Simply put, I would just like to find a hinge that can open and close the CP from the back (so the hinges are hidden inside the front)
My problem arises with the huge overhang that the top has over the bottom, so euro hinges seem to be out, since they don't account for such a huge overhang when opening and closes things... Most hinges seem to assume that the ends for the wood meet at the endpoint, or at least that the overhang is only enough to cover the edge of the corresponsing wood, not 4-5 inches more.
I called rockler.com and asked for a suggestion, and I was given these Hidden Barrel Hinges (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID=270&TabSelect=Details), which seemed great until I got them in house and realized that when drilled into the bottom of teh cover piece it would stick out the top. It seems the barrel hinges are only made to be drilled into the edge of the wood, not the face.
You can find a picture of the CP below...Is this really so hard?

have you tried just a simple piano hinge?

have you tried just a simple piano hinge?
That's exactly what I was going to say, and exactly what I'm using on my panels.
-
Well I was considering that but don't you see them if you took a look under the CP top?
I'd imagine, for example, a full cabinet shot would look a bit ugly with the CP hinge sticking out like a sore thumb when I'm trying to make everything else as seemless and flush as possible...
-
My first cab was a Lusid design... piano hinge all the way.

How did you keep the hinge hidden?
-
Anyone?
I figure you can route down into the CP's box to lay the piano hinge down, but then that would still look ugly....

I don't actually have these mounted on my panel yet (still in process of building)... but it looked like they would work when I tried them on a mock-up of my panel design....

They came from Rockler.

Wow! I wish I'd known about that hinge when I started my panels. That's perfect!

I was actually looking at your hinge a little bit ago...
It looks like your overhang is only 3/4", but I need to account for a hinge that can work with a 5 inch overhang. Can that hinge open "Over and outside" of the box's wood, as opposed to meeting both at the ends?
-
Yeah...
According to rockler, that hinge only works with a very small overhang, because it only opens in that exact direction; there's no swivel or moving it around.
I tried to get them to recommend me a hinge (they actually recommended me the barrel hinge which didnt work), and they suggest I get custom work done. :(
Lovely times...

Here's that same hinge using a 5" overhang. Doesn't quite get you what you want...
-
Let's see how well I can describe this...
I was thinking about this hinge....
You could gain some "opening angle" by mounting the hinge in a chiseled out (or routed out) section on the inside front of the control panel box... Similar to the way you would install a hinge on your [house] front door. I'm sure you'd be able to open the panel top 90 degrees... but no more. If you're looking for more than 90 degrees [with a 5" panel overhang], this hinge isn't going to work for you.
-
Wow man... talk about a favor.... You're awesome.
I think that routing out solution may just work perfect for me..
I didn't have any delusions of getting any more than 90 degrees as it is, it was just finding a clean way of doing that, which I think this hinge might provide...
So I guess I should be routing possibly halfway into the wood or so..
Thanks man
EDIT: Here is the hinge via link Paul provided to me: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=255 (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=255)

I'v been following paulscade thread pretty close as I am building pretty much the same designed cab. I also am trying to find some hinges that will suit a CP with a fair bit of overhang (4").
The link you have above looks like it wouldn't even give you 90 degrees would it???
-
Not totally sure yet, but paulscade suggested that if you route the hinge into the wood a bit on the inside it should give you some leverage to open it...
Although it seems like both of us are in the same boat here. I don't have definite answer and I'm also still looking around for a solution
