Can this be done without modifications ? has anyone done this before ? Pictures of what harness to plug in to what

You need 49 way joys ,a med res monitor, and controls for players 3 and 4.
No, it won't work without modification. Search for an arcade manual to Gauntlet Legends to get the correct pin outs.
... and wrong section.

GL's monitor res. can be low or mid(select via dip switch)
Besides the standard 3 buttons per player and 1 start button per player, you will also need 4x 49 way joys, a 49 way I/O interface(I think), plus all needed cabling for joysticks/extra buttons.

...and a control panel that is twice as large as a Mortal Kombat 2 stock panel....

A dedicated Blitz 99 control panel will bolt on to a MK2 perfectly

Eh, I wouldn't worry about making it four players at first. Do you think you will have three other friends that will be over often to play the game with you? Whenever I need two extra controllers for my cab I just make the extra people stand there with PSX controllers.
You can set a dip switch in gauntlet legends to allow 8-way controls. Don't know how well the game plays like that though...

Hold that thought for another thread. This guy wants to use a GL PCB! Not an emulated or console version. Besides, GL doesn't work at full speed in MAME(tm)

Yes you can, but the gameplay sucks!

I'm currently seeking a dedicated gauntlet right now, all this swapping and mame slooow gameplay has prompted me to just buy the original and have it all !!

Well, yeah. I guess he could rig something up to make it work with the PCB, but it would probably be less work to just make a new CP. It's really not that tough.
My opinion on this project: completely doable.
EDIT: Well, if you're going to just buy the dedicated cab than that just solves the problems.

how about if i hookup a nintendo gamecube to my mame ? I already have the game on gamecube/wii and would like to use that ? I would need an adapter to use my control panel. Anyone know were to get that ?
