Title: DOS version of Mame
Post by: raist0069 on June 03, 2003, 05:13:18 pm
First let me state my problem.  I am currently using mame32 on winxp.  My motherboard has onboard sound.  Some games the sound gets all dissorted.  Someone said it was because of windows and the problem didn't occur in DOS.  The thing is I have no Idea what I need to do to run the dos version.  I know I can get to a command prompt via the start button, but it will still be in a windows environment right?  I have read people booting into DOS before windows loads.  And if they wanted to run windows they can always start windows via a command etc.  Would I need DOS drivers?  Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks.

The only Driver you need for pure DOS is the Sound Card driver. If this is not loaded, you won't hear any sound at all.

What is pure DOS?  Is it something I need to purchase?  How do I run it on boot up before windows loads?  I have always been a windows person.  I know very little on dos.

Then don't use dos!   If you are running mame32 then your computer skills probably aren't up to running dos at this point.

Pure Dos= not the command prompt in Xp, it's emulated dos.

Howard's right, if you don't know what DOS is, it's probably gonna be pretty tough for you to figure out....

...but if you are determined, here's some of the best info I've found to be helpful:

Good Luck.

I was runing win32 when i decided i wanted to put dos on my p200 for my cocktail, it worked out okay, but i do agree if you do not know what dos is then it will be a pain in the arse.

Thank you for the link JLR2000.

It's not that I do not know what DOS is.  Just confused on the true/pure DOS idea.  I am assuming it is just DOS outside of windows?  I have used DOS to partition/format hard drives and installing windows but thats about it.  I don't have much more experiance than that.  One thing that I wonder is how do you boot into true DOS?  You have to use a disk?

Pure dos is just DOS running as the actual OS, rather than as a SHELL within windows, or a stripped down CLE from other versions of windows. Don't let people badmouth the DOS for you though...

I mean dear god, when did people start calling DOS complicated?

Um, no one called DOS complicated.  Just was pointing out that if you are only familiar with a GUI environment, then a non-gui environment will be tough to get used to.....

Personally I have 2 of my current MAME machines running DOS.  I think the link I gave above does a good job explaining some of the nuances of a DOS setup, I know I found it helpful.

You didn't say how powerful of a computer you were running. But I wouldn't go to dos for a couple reasons. One it's a pain to set up, two it doesn't run as well anymore as the windows version and three good luck finding a dos driver for the built in sound on your motherboard. I'd guess by what your saying if you stuck a pci soundblaster 16 card in there it would probably clear up your audio problems. Your not out anything if it doesn't like I said you'd probably need that card anyways to be able to run dos.

You might want to try Fraggle's boot disk?  It's helpful in setting up mame and Advmame for DOS and also ArcadeOS

http://mame.how.to/ (http://mame.how.to/)

Oh yeah,  I would defiantly get a SoundBlaster16 PCI board, its made a 100% difference with my system.  Cleared up all my sound problems and it's easy to setup.

Fraggles boot disk is helpful... but it does give you the option to format over you hardrive and install Dos 7.0 (or drdos or whateveR) -- so don't just pop that into your familys main computer and idly type "y" to different prompts =P

i.e. be careful, man!

Wow thanks for all the advice.  I wouldn't even think about using dos mame if I didn't have sound problems in windows.

This helped you in dos or in windows?  I don't know the reason but someone said it wasn't because of my on-board audio, but because of the windows environment.  To be more specific, I play Killer Instinct a lot and the sound gets really dissorted at times.  If there is a way to fix this problem in windows, that would be great.  I took the impression that I had to use dos to fix it.

ASUS A7V266 onboard audio, AMD XP1800+, 768mb RAM, geforce2 pro 64mb, winxp.  This is the PC I am currently using with mame32.  When I build my cab it will be about the same hardware except I will use arcadeVGA and WG D9200.   Was going to use winXP, and be totally dedicated to emulation.

If your using the gui version of mame32 also try to see if it still studders with the standard command line version. Also you could just use a frontend and use U64 to emulate your killer instinct roms. It will run better anyways.

Actually i think i dont need to bad mouth or tell you need to buy a soundblaster card. Try turning auto frameskip off, it does wonders. I dont know where the option is but im sure you can find it.

raist,

check out this thread (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=7610)

also make sure you aren't running extra process/services in XP (i.e. tweak your operating system for max performance... nothing like some crazy background process indexing your drive/files while you're playing a game... )

*shrug*

Good luck!

I was having sound issues (win98 onboard audio) with Donkey kong and a few other games, and when I installed a SB16PCI card it cleared up the problems.
