Title: S-Video and Component users: do your reds look too orange?
Post by: TheManuel on April 30, 2008, 10:54:05 am
I am messing around with a Radeon 7500 I got from eBay.
The first thing I noticed was how the red colors look to orange.
One of my favorite games is Samurai Shodown II.  When it loads, it briefly shows a red screen and the orange coming out of my video card hit me right between the eyes.
The TV controls and driver saturation settings help a bit but they don't make reds look red ultimately.

Has anybody else had this problem?
Are there any solutions?

Thanks.

They looked rather pink on my TV. Colors in general just looked a bit washed out.

I agree with the washed-out description.
After reading the other post floating around where you talked about component inputs, I'm reconsidering this route as I'm having all sorts of problems with my S-video setup.

Coincidentally, I just PM'd you asking whether you set MAME up for D3D on that machine with component-out.

I am not sure if the card you described would work on the computer I am using.  I think it is AGP 2x or 4x at best but can't really tell.
I might be willing to chance it, though.

I'm finally back to messing around with video setup for my soon to be finished cab after spending lots of time on software side of things.
I ended up getting an ATI Radeon 9550 with the YPbPr dongle so I'm using the component inputs of my CRT TV.

Last time I was working on this, I had set up some of the color controls on the TV's service menu and was pretty happy with it but now coming back with fresh eyes I realized I simply made the reds look better at the expense of screwing up the other colors.

I'm resurrecting this topic in the hopes that someone runs into it that can suggest possible work-arounds.

Any ideas on how to make the colors look better out of the component out put of my card?  S-video suffers the same problem.

Thanks.

Try another card. Yours in particular could be iffy.

Maybe I'll try NVidia.
Any experience out here with nVidia YPbPr output?

Composite and svideo has always had problems with red, if you try, the reds will bleed out like crazy because of problems with making the colour subcarrier (pal is a bit better with its gamut but still leaves a long way to go compared with RGB or component)

If you could disable the reduction of the colour to make it legal ntsc values, the resulting signal would just mess with the chroma decoder in the tv and just cause an ugly mess when they were attempted to be displayed. Things like half the screen flickering into green instead, black and white over part of the picture and other things that would be much worse then a slightly orange tint to your red.

Your gonna have to live with it if you insist on using a 55 year old video standard.

TOK has a great component fed cab. I don't know what card he's using. I know the newer ones - for example an 8500GT I came across recently - have seven-pin TV outs to do both S-video and component from the same output.

Thanks.

A bit discouraging but at least I know it is probably a common problem.
I might consider an additional card if I find a good price for it.

I'm using a Radeon 9550 with component adapter... I think you may have PM'd me about my setup in the past.
Newegg used to have different versions of the card for 25 to 35 bucks. Looks like they only have one now and it's $44. Not sure if they're getting harder to find as they become obsolete or what.

I am using a 9550 as well.

TOK:
Could you be bothered to launch samsho2 and pause at the red/orange screen that shows up as soon as the emulation starts and perhaps post a picture?
I realize the colors will have to go through a digital camera and then through a PC monitor but at least I could get an idea of whether you get similar results.

Thanks.

Thought you were using a 7500...
Is there a vert game that exhibits this on your setup? The cab I'm using this with doesn't have any horizontal ROMS on it.

OK.
I'll find a vertical game tonight where I think the reds look off.

Thanks.
