I was content with my MAME cab with a modular cp, mostly because I don't have room for anything else. Well, I now need to make room. I saw this Ridge Racer on CL for $200 and I couldn't resist. It is currently sitting in the garage, and I think it is going to have to stay there - this thing is huge :)
Ridge Racer is definitely showing its age (1993), but it is fun for the price.

Working with no problems?
Good deal either way.

Very nice. God it's sad to think of that game as a "classic", but it's 15 years old now. Wow that's scary just thinking about it!

The clutch and the shifter are not working at the moment. The guy I bought it from thinks it is a menu option, but I think they may be unplugged. I'll check it this weekend.Otherwise, everything works fine. This game was in his house, so it was played regularly, and it plays great.
jdburg - I hear ya. I was already 22 when this came out - damn I feel old :)

The steering wheel was loose, so I tore the cp apart to try to tighten it up the mount for the force feedback springs had ripped a hole in the mounting bracket of the wheel. The other mount had broken through before, and someone badly welded a patch on it. It is amazing how operators patch things together over the years to keep these things earning. I had a happs wheel similar to this one, so I used the mounting plate to replace the one from the game. Now the wheel is great, and I only spent $20 for the wheel on ebay last year, so it was a cheap fix. I still have not figured out the shifter and the clutch. I need to find a wiring diagram for this game, it is hard to trace the wires in the cabinet, and I would like to get away with leaving them tied up nice inside there. :)
After tearing apart the CP, I now realize that I have a lot of cleaning ahead of me - this thing is pretty nasty under a nice looking exterior. I found a bunch of tokens hiding in any nook and cranny they could get into. Looks like this game has been all over California.
I will be spending some time in the monitor forum this weekend. The image looks like this:

I can't figure out how to adjust it. If anyone knows how, please let me know.

Let me guess? Reno?
I see a few pretty good deals coming out of Reno, but the drive would necessitate a weekend haul and drop. Seems most listers aren't interested in weekend runs. Oh well. :dunno
-
Yep, it's Reno. A couple of months ago I missed a Donkey Kong, Defender, and Pole Position for $250 each. I look at CL many times a day now. :)
I made some more progress on the cab tonight, easy fixes. A loose plug on the PCB was causing the clutch and shifter to not work. After I got that working, one of the switches wouldn't register. A loose wire at the same harness, I just shoved it in for now. I'll have to figure out how to crimp it in there later.
I still need to fix the pincushion problem, and make a couple of brackets to hold the two cab pieces together. The seat doesn't lock into position, so I will have to fix that too. After that is done, it will be time for a lot of cleaning.
Now that everything is, or is close, to working, that $200 is seeming like an even better deal.

20 min's down the road from me are these:
Shorten Those Links, Dammit! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-Ridge-Racer-Coin-Operated-Driving-Games-by-namco_W0QQitemZ180235635786QQihZ008QQcategoryZ3945QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
If I had the space I would get them but they are just too big, and apart from anything else my girlfriend has already said no chance! :censored:
I have always liked RR myself pcolson & $200 was a steal! :)
Regards.

Congrats on the Ridge Racer!
Mine doesn't have the topper, I'm jealous now ;D
I have the manual for that type (the ones online are different styles), I'll see if I can bring it into work and scan it into PDF format for you.

TheDriver - buy them anyway! You will find somewhere to put them, your girlfriend will never notice. :laugh2:
I drive a Scion xA, and this game is not too much smaller than my car!!! It is huge.
Angry_Radish - I would really appreciate that. The ones online are completely useless for this version. The guy I bought it from said this cabinet was a prototype, do you have any idea how many were made? If I ever see a topper for sale, I'll let you know. :)
