Project : C-MACC'S (Complete - Multi Arcade Console Computer System)

History

I personaly have been using, playing with, working on many systems most of my life from the very First home Atari console through BBC Acron Electron and on wards up to the newist PCs and Gameing Consoles.

The idear of the project is quite simple, It is to house every known Emulated and None Emulated Console, Computer, Arcade syestem in one cabinet.

Allso to use commanly known front ends to navagate each system and game or program. Each system will allso have a History and Pictures and Videos of each and every game.

That is My aim.

Project Items reqired and Projected Costs involved.

Arcade Cabinet - £500 to £1500
Real Arcade CRT Screen 25" to 30" - £100 to £250
Jamma Harness - £65.00
Jamma to XBox harness Converter - £50
Jamma to Playstation Converter - £30
Jamma to Nintendo Converter - £30
Jamma to Dreamcast Converter - £30
PC capale of running every thing £150
Wireless access - £40
Wireless keybord and mouse - £45
Audio System - £50
Software to run every thing - £120

Sony PSP - £99
Nintendo DS - £50
Extra Switches and Wireing loom - £50

Total expected costs involved - £2500+

Over time i have nearly every thing on the list bar the arcade cab & Moniter and cables of which im in the process of buying.

The Software i also have and own has been installed in this spec pc below.

PC Spec

Amd Sempron 3000
1 GB ram (thank's simon for the help with this)
Geforce 8500 Super+ 1 gb DDR 2 ram
Asus K8N-VN
1 x 120 Gig HD IDE
1 x 500 Gig HD IDE
600 Watt Power supply
NO DVD is needed.
Windows XP Pro (bloat-ware removed to 230Mbs in size)
GameEX + Every Emulator none on the net.

Total cost to build £100

All the console above i all ready own plus a few spare.

Oky i did start off by building my own cab but canned the idear after a small ammount of time realising that building my own wasnt cost effective. It was cheeper buying in a per built cab with a nice 29" arcade moniter.

Any this build is 1/2 through and ill just post up some pics and explain what ive done so far and whjat im aiming to do along the way ect ect ect ...

As you can see im installing various none emulated consoles and hand helds into the system. The pc has now got 4 x 750 Gig Hard drives installed and is running gameex as a front end and has been shelled so you cannot see windows Xp what so ever.

Any way on with more pics

Interesting project. I have a few questions if thats OK.

Which systems are you emulating and which are you using the actual consoles on?

On the consoles, how are you loading the games? Will you have access to them from the outside of the cab?

What on Gods green earth do you need 3 Terabytes of storage for?

How do you plan on using your control panel for emulated consoles that use joysticks?

Are you going to switch out the consoles by hand when you want to play them?

Do they actually make stand-up candy cabs, or did you modify that?  :applaud:

That's a hell of an investment, £2500+ is like, $47,000.00 US dollars. (If it isn't it will be soon)

Hi there again.

Right consoles being installed hardware wise are -

Xbox (will have a 2 x 750 Gb Fitted once i get the time)
Xbox360 (just leaving this as standard for now)
Ps 3 With 60 Gig (he one that playes ps1 and ps2 games as well) (60gb hd was replaced with a 200 Gb one)
Wii  Cos it allso playes Game cube as well
Nintendo DS (dammaged atm need to repair it and wire it up)
PSP (has a TV out fitted)
Dream cast (fully modded)

The reason why im using these hardware consoles is they are not properly and fully working emulated there for reverted to hardware insted.

Each console is turned on individualy useing switches that im ading on to the system ( they are hidden from normal view as notto clutter up the Playing area)

The cd Roms will be removed from each of the systems and placed Hidden at the frot were you can have access to them.

The xbox 360 / ps3 / wii controllers willall have recharge points and a storage area.

There is 4 TB of HD space as im achiving every thing to do with gaming. this isnt just a arcade machean its a histroy of gaming in one arcade cab. And will reflect that buy haveing any thing and every thing includeing pics and history of every game i can get my grubby hands on.

The Jemma to ? Conntector i am working on will allow all the systems to run through it. If you turn on a system it will switch to that system automaticly. Ony problem being is you can only run 1 console at a time (but whats wrong with that it save a fortune in electric).

Heat is a bigproblem but im working on that. all the console will be stripped to there bare bones and plenty of fans and i maybe emplying a water coling loop into the cab to provide the cooling.

Costs so far including all the hard ware is more than above as ive orderd some new stuff and a new pc as i blew the old one.

If you add up every thing being added to the system you are looking by the time ive finished min of £4500.

As for systems being emulated the is every thing as in every mame / mess / console / computer / aracde game that i get get working through game ex. And if it doesnt work through ex ill find a way around it. The hardware build is the easy bit the software build is a nightmare .....

P.s some one said someware im greedy, personly i dont think it is, this is a retro heven musium / archive and in retrosepc will reflect all of that.

For a more updated thread of what im doing and how im progresing and photos go here ->

I did the same thing with the X arcade, had PS1,Xbox,DC,GB and the PC all worked via switch boxes.

Heat is a problem, but once you get the final pieces in place you will see which devices need better cooling.  My advice is to make small platforms for the consoles so there is adequate airflow.

The TB storage is totally up to you, but I would look at loading everything from a server, thus the problems of archiving will resolve.

All your 8 bit up to 16 bit images, mpegs, and roms can be stored on 1 500GB disc.  Your xbox should be ok with one 500gb drive too.  I cannot see you playing everything, besides it will take ages to locate it all.

I can see your point, and the candy cab is a great final resting place for all your consoles.  I would go out and buy a Xarcade controller and interfaces for your consoles from www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk or depending on the euro one of the EU suppliers.  It will save you problems later.

You managed to get everything fitted inside ok, and it looks good!

4GB ( 2 x 2GB) Elixir Memory
Pentium Duel core E2180 2Ghz 1mb l2 cash 800Mhz FSB

Geforce - 850GT PCIE 1024Mb DDR2 (was dirt cheap)
600 watt Standard PWR Supply
6 x 120mm Fans (bargin at £3.50 each)

Ive got 2 x 350 Gb IDE Hds spare that ill allso be adding on as back up drives for the roms only.

But i messed up the CPU was just a stop gap for when my other cpu arrives but once i checked out the ram it was only 800Mhz and i needed 1066Mhz ram Doh .... So ill have to re order some more after my new CPU Arrives

On order a q6600 CPU quad core and a beast to over clock. This should arrive by wen. Been 1 mouth now for me waiting for the arrival of the converters for the jamma interface and LED interface and various other bits and lets just say Ive given up waiting now and gone and ordered another one. (thats jamma to PC interface card).

once i have enough cash saved up ill order the rest of the bits thats havent arrived and hopefully will be able to play this thing.

Im haveing to reinstall game ex and all the software again on the new pc but thats not to much of a problem. It took 3 hours to move all the games roms onto the 2 Tb of Hds. I allso haveing to order a Sata Raid card as my mother bord only has 2 sata ports and when buying it i forgot to look lol ....

All the fans are controlled so i can turn them up or down or off.

The airflow comming in is 400+ CFM in total if all fans are on at full blat (that alot of room temp air)

What monitor are you using? If it's 15khz capable how are you getting mame to display that? How did you blow your computer?

For those also wondering about the cab height, notice the bottom is a 'booster'. I don't think I've every seen that before but no surprise they make it.

monitern is a phillips / LG one.

Details are

CRT : A68QCU970X V4
Chasis Model No : C3129DB , H Freq - 15 / 24 / 31 Khz , V Feq 47 / 70 Hz
29" CRT
it can handle 15Khz and just edit the registry to get it to display at that.

I didnt blow my pc i just bought a new one esp for this project. I did how ever lose a on bord gfx at one point as the moniter wasnt grounded properly and allso lost a  DS due to me dropping it bu other wise every thing is running fine.

well helloa again ...

A few small updates for you guys.

Got my self the following today and been ahpply oc'ing my eqipment

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L
Intel q6600 Go steppings (2.4 Ghz Effective)
OCZ 2gig ram

Overclocked the pc to 4.6 Ghz and shes running fine and stable and temps are oky so not a bad result from a chip running at 2.4 Ghz. Not the largest or biggist clock in the world but hay if my emus dont run at 10% all the time ill do more ajustments and incorparte a watercooling system.

im going to restart from screach on the softwareand see how it all goes and what this little £250 PC can do ..

again more pics and info over at www.Over-clock.co.uk/ivb

hopefully this little best might sound over the top but in the end it will be worth it.

been Trying my hardist to get Chancast the Dreamcast emulator to work. With out luck so given up on that idear for the moment. So i tested out my Dreamcast and found my DC was broken so i put a advert up on FreeCycle and asked if any one had one lying arround. Well ive not got 2 dreamcast's that work lol Now hehe and they cost nothing.

Im awaiting delivery of this item pictured below for the xbox and DC Version

once this arrives ill be able to retro fit the Xbox. there is all so there is a DC version costing £128.00 which im going to try and get my hands on.

I have all ready got a PC to Jamma Converter called the J-Pac fitted onto the new PC.

Just got my email confirming the delivery of the  Pac-Drive which is the Led Driver bord for the lights under the buttons.

All this stuff can be orderd from the following

http://www.ultimarc.com/ (http://"http://www.ultimarc.com/")
http://gremlinsolutions.co.uk/ (http://"http://gremlinsolutions.co.uk/") (met gremlin personly and what a nice bloke)

Now to get all this stuff to work in harmony there is a 6-in-1 MultiJAMMA Switcher PCB. Now what this does is very simple. It allows 6 Jamma Bords to use 1 controller setup and 1 arcade moniter. This uses a Remote to switch between them all. So takeing into account im going to be running the folowing

PC / Xbox / Dreamcast / DC / WII wich is 5 Items the 6 In one is a Fessable option.

Pic of the 6 in 1

This is not a bad product and cost is arrounf £60 to £70.

Now i know the cost of all this work is bulding up quite a bit. Know there are way to do all this stuff cheaply but im tying to made C-Maccs work very smoothly and the realy only way to do it is by useing some of the above items to make it all work Flawlessly.

All so another note about the joysticks on C-Maccs. I found it a bit of a pain in the ass having to swich from 8 way to 4 way and visa versa. You have to literly open the coin door. Pull the bar to release the controll pannel, Take a screw driver and undo 4 scres and then move a plate to move the joysticks between 4 way and 8 way and then close of the control pannel when you finshed.

Pic of the plate below -

Why do this you ask and whats the diffrence between 4 way and 8 way. Well In Games such as pacman to corner Smoothly the Joystick was only move up, down , left , right so cornering is fast and smooth, When in 8 way mode its actualy quite hard to corner correcly. Now the problem with 4 way mode is  it is rubbish for games such as 1942 , street fighter ect ect, were you need to move in all directions as you cannot move the joystick say up & left very smothly hence you need a 8 way Joystick.

Well after a little hunting i found the joystick that might do the job just fine. But the problem i have is i love the arcade feel of the sticks i have in place at the moment. The new one ive been looking at is called the Mag-Stik Plus. Now it uses a Magnet to center the joystick and to move from 4 way to 8 way you simply pull of the stick and twist is to rotate the plate. Sounds all good but ill be trading off the feel of a good arcade stick for the ease of use. I realy need to have a think about what im going to do with this problem.

Pic of new stick is here

Price each is approx £29 each after vat ect ect.

Another note as well.

Ive fitted the New PC in C-Maccs and well she didnt fit to wall as im using a full sized motherbord so she is on a angle. I used a Old case and litraly cut her to shreds to give me the motherbord mounting plate and card holder. All so there isnt enough plugs inside of C-Maccs to allow all the consoles and PC to be fitted in one go. So ive spliced the wiring and throw in a UK 4 way plug strip. This will allow me to keep the 1 Cable to C-macc's and plug as much as i need to get it working correctly.

Ill take photos of the mess inside of C-Macc's later on and you see shes turning into a right jungle of cabling.

I purchased 2 mag-stick plus joysticks myself. Once I installed the sticks and played around with multiple games I changed back to my original sticks. It was nice to be able to change from 4-way to 8-way but the Mag-stick plus joysticks have a extremely small move radius. I just did not like the feel of the sticks. I can't say if you will feel the same way but I just wanted warn you before fork out the cash. They cost more then the average stick.

Thks for the heads up. Consider them knocked off my wish list stright away lol .

I would like to keep the arcade feel i need some thing simalar though that have the same feel as my present ones and dont whant to go down the route of have two joysticks per player that would just be rubbish. Think the idear of having every conceable option on top is just a pure mess lol ...

allso sound of the arcade machean sucks there is just no base and mono is so boring so after thinking about adding in a car amp and speekers i came across a nice little seprates Tecnics system at our local dump for £2.50. It was buggerd though so after a play about and a bit of soldering and some new caps i have now got 200 watts of pure sound to add to the syste.

Im going to stip down the speekers and clean them up and paint them white. The only thing ill be putting into C-Maccs is the amp and speekers so the rest of the stuff will be ebayed off.

Also pic below some things you just have to have on a arcade machean.

rocking at full volume hehe ..

just need matching stands now to complete the looks for the sound.

Right things will be closing to a end soon the new 6 in 1 arrived today from jamabords.com (thks for fast delivery guys).

Allso placed a order for 3 more J-Pacs and various other leads wich will be here in next few days and 2 x LCD Light Guns and 1 x xbox 360 Gutar Wirless and a Wirless Xbox 360 to PC adapter. All these should arrive in the next few days and i can finish off C-Macc's for good.

So far on C-Macc's were looking at 3.5 Million games not including the console's that are hard wired in. I think If i had every game for all the console's you be looking at nealy 4 million+ games possably.

The only problem i have right at this moment in time is the xbox 360 and a way to wire this up. I dont know if the xbox 360 VGA will work with the Jpac so ill have to do a little resurch allso im running out of room fast.

Well here are the Pics of the 6 in 1 and hopefully next time i post ill have every thing else on my door step ready to finish of C-Macc's

well thing are moving on still waiting for the arrival of all the parts but while sitting down and thinking about things ive suddendly relised i forgotten 1 vital part and that is networking it all together lol .

So i have now got 2 things to chouse from

1) Hard wire it all in to a switch or router

2) Add a Wireless Bridge / Router and hard wire it all into that them bridge it all into my main network at home wich btw is quite extensive.

I think im going to go for option 2 and go wireless with it all. But along with this brings even more problems and that is power. The mains power going in is only 1 lead and this has to run every things so sounds quite simple. the problem is there is so many devices with in this cab the wireing is getting and gone well past and beyond a joke. Trying to keep every thing tidy is a complete and total and utter nightmare.

Some radical thinking needs to go into place now and i think im going to have to tear C-Macc's complely apart and start again once every thing fully arrives.

Allso thinking about the guns should i go with adding side USB's to each side of the unit or should i just hardwire it all in ... Oh the problems this project brings in.

I dont get many suggestions on what to do and nealy every thing ive done has been through pure and unadultrated "stuff it lets just see if it works". wich has cost me in the long run in costly mistakes and uneeded purchcases.

the spares i have left over is mouting up and well lets say i have enogh to build a second project.

hmm think ill have to sit down and have a long hard think abou what i do next hehe.

boy oh boy am i pissed off. The lcd light guns arrived today. The problem isnt he light guns its the delivery man demanding £23 off me due to UK tax and VAT. so in total importing 2 x lcd lightguns has just cost me £80 what a frigin rip off this country is.

Second problem now lays with the guns and the cab. The cab is on a angle and the light gun LEDS need to be facing you directly lese when you aim top left or top right it goes out of sink. so either i have to mount the leds on the out side of the cab using some sort of braket or im buggerd...... No reviews tell you that now do they ...

hmm ill sort it never the less, allso im going to by my self a powed hub as well since the recoil is like a lazey man recoil when it decides to work lol ...

Very nice looking bezel.  I have seen the ones that go in the artwork folder and are specific to a certain game ( donkey kong, frogger, etc) but have never seen a custome one.  I hope you can answer a few questions for me about it.  First off what is the best way to make one?  What are the file specifications?  Can you pick which games use it?  I am planning on having a horizontal monitor and would like to create one that would be used on al vertical games to fill in the sidebars.  I like that yours doesn't go all the way around as I think these make the game to small then.  Any information you can supply would be greatly appreciated.

hi there.

Im useing gameex as a front end and then mame as the emulator. all i did was create a bezel for Gameex and told gameex  to use my custome bezel for the games.

nothing to fancy at all. if you would like ill post up my bezel in a zip and you can play with it..

Love the light up buttons for each game!!!   :notworthy:

Now I am going to have to do that.  :)

Does the Pac-Drive do that?  Does Game-Ex handle the buttons automagically?

they are there to separate the games from the bezel. on some games it stops it merging in for e.g pack man has black sides and this helps seprate it.

you dont need them there though and could easly cut them out.

Hi there i created C-Macc;s the Multi Console and arcade system. I entered it into a Competition on Custom PC magazine.

I now need people to Vote on it if passable. This will only take a few min of your time. If we can make this Mod of the summer it will raise the profile of Arcade systems more and not only that help sales of more systems as this is a well known magazine here in the uk. This over all will be good for all.

Im all ready going to be featured in the readers drive's section of the new mags this moth but this will help boost the appeal more and more.

So please vote a 10 if you think its worth it.
