Title: 20in+ LCD (not widescreen if possible) Sellers??
Post by: Games001 on April 12, 2008, 12:18:19 pm
Does anyone have a site or location suggestion for purchasing 20+in LCD PC monitors that do not fall under that anti-mame world of widescreen?

Thanks all.

I have a 20" non-widescreen made by Westinghouse, which I picked up on sale last year for $200. Anything larger than 20", and the price jumps considerably. It wasn't worth it to me. If you really need something bigger, CRT is going to be the way to go.

Check out newegg.com for some good prices on the 20+ sizes.

20" Monitors (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020+1301922115+1309821318&name=20%22)

I have the HP 2065 and it is an awesome monitor!

A bit pricey however...

Gads.. that is priced up there for so basic a monitor.  I bought my 26in widescreen for that same price not long ago and it's a killer monitor.

Just seems to be getting really hard to find LCDs that are not widescreen.

I use a HP LP2465 and I "Mame" on it all the time with no problems. What kind of problems do you run into using a widescreen monitor?

everything is strenched from left to right and squashed from top to bottom wich makes alot of the classics look terrible and out of shape.

I purchased the viewsonic 20.3" 4:3 monitor.. highly reccomend if you can drop $400 on a monitor.  It's not the cheapest, but it's very nice!

I know a good 19" LCD designed for Arcade uses, though a bit pricey. Only one inch off from your goal, but not a widescreen.
Dual Resolution and Automatic power on like CRTs. 170 degree viewing angle as well!

Check the link for the full specs.

It's not a problem if you don't notice or mind the incorrect aspect ratio.  A correct 4:3 AR should yield black bars on the sides if you run MAME on a widescreen monitor.

Vertical games would of course look the worst if you are stretching to full width of your widescreen LCD: Pacman, Galaga, Donkey Kong, etc.  But horizontal games would also be stretched (they really should have black bars on the sides).  Some off the top of my head would be Moon Patrol, Marble Madness, Joust, Metal Slug, Stargate, etc.

You can use screenshots from MAWS (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/galaga for example) to get a general idea of what the game's aspect ratio is supposed to look like and compare it to what you see on the monitor.

I do admit that the picture you posted doesn't look too bad.  What game is that?

Actually the game showing is NFL Blitz 2000. Here is a pic of it running JrPacMan.

As an example, here is a screenshot of Jr Pacman running at it's correct aspect ratio (224x288).  The width of the screenshot is almost exactly the same as the middle of the screen in your picture for a good comparison.  You can see side by side that your image is stretched vertically by a very noticeable amount to fill in the LCD screen.

DO NOT BUY AN LCD MONITOR FROM NEWEGG.  While I love Newegg and use them 1st for most everything PC related,  their dead pixel policy is just batty.

Quote
There must be a minimum of 8 dead pixels to declare an LCD display defective and eligible for return.

Unacceptable...period.

I think the Samsung 214T is the best LCD for a cabinet. It is 21.3 inch, 3:4 aspect ratio, it has a Pivot function and has amazing viewing angles (vertical and horizontal) and rich black. The same screen is built into the Eizo S2100 and the Nec 2190UXP as well, but they are more expensive. Response times are good as well.
Make sure you buy a S-IPS or S-PVA panel that has a maximum of 15ms G2G and says it has viewing angles of 178/178. And these do only exist as 21.3 4:3 screen or as 23,24,27 or 30 inch widescreen. All other options are crap, and below 500$ you will not find anything good. Viewing angles of panels written as 170/160 are not even close to the angles you get when they say they are 178/178's, don't be fooled by the slight difference in numbers!

You CAN get a great LCD for under $350 that has all the specs you mention. The HP2065 20" LCD. Newegg has a $50 rebate too so it ends up being under $300. Best monitor for the money period.

I've bought 2 LCD's from Newegg...  neither one had a single dead pixel.  One was a 19" Widescreen ViewSonic DVI monitor, and the other was my 37" Olevia TV.

Funny I was finding the exact same problem.  Getting non-widescreen at 20+ inch is tough!

I;m not a fan of widescreen as I want somewhat of an arcade look.  (Yes I know get an arcade monitor... but after reading all the WG problems on this board, I am going CRT or LCD).

I don't use widescreen on my cabinet, but 19" widescreen on my main PC runs everything in the correct aspect ratio.
I love rotating it for vertical games. Look great.

No one makes them over 20". I spent a whole day surfing the internet and came up with nothing. This one company could make them buy they would cost THOUSANDS of dollars. The guy told me to not even bother.

Thanks for the plug DJ. Here are the facts:
- First off anything over 19" will be 16:9 widescreen or old stock
- Next I have 100 pcs of 19" coming in hopefully soon, this has been a 6 month project... I have been testing multiple games like NFL Blitz, Golden tee ...

Before I release the order for the panels I want to be comfortable that they will meet the needs to do CGA and EGA/mid res as well as stuff like SVGA XGA and uo.

We are pretty much there with 26" and 32" but wide screen.

I really need to clone myself cause I still have not found the time to get my mame cabinet running. I have Mame 32 loaded, All the roms say they are ready to roll. When I try to play any of the games it goes black for a second and then back to the Mame screen.

Any thoughts...

Rick

In MAME32, right click on a game and select 'audit'.  That will tell you if you have the necessary rom files.

Well 21.3 inch is still being made, but I think it is a shortened panel based on 24 inch widescreens. Most of the time they cost even more than the 24 inch the 21 inch screen is cut out of. I ordered a Eizo SX2431 now. The S2100 is the shortened 4:3 version of exact this panel, but it costs 100 euro's more! You can even cover a part of the panel if the screen should look true 4:3.

With Samsung it is the oposit though. The 245T (not to be confused with the 245B which is a cheapo-screen) is 300 euro's more than the 214T. But with the Eizo I get 5 years warranty and 0 dead pixel warranty.
Here in Holland:
Eizo 21 inch = 850 euros
Eizo 24 inch = 750 euros
Samsung 24 inch = 850 euros
Samsung 21 inch = 550 euros
