Yea, but you still can't have it in the UK.

Way to be respectful.  :censored:

This thread will quickly fall apart and wind up in PnR. (Which, unfortunately for the late Mr Heston, is where it seems to belong)

RIP Chuck. No one seems to remember you for your civil rights works....

I listened to an audiobook of The Old Man and the Sea that he narrated.  It was phenomenally well done.  I basically feel like it completely made up for all the really ---smurfy--- things he's done with the NRA.

Of course they don't. Everything they know about him, they know about from a terribly lopsided and cruel Michael Moore movie.

Right, which is exactly why it'll wind up in PnR. Like you, it's hard for me not to mention Michael Moore without using words like "liar".

I will say one thing, he's a genius of an editor. He can easily make something out of nothing. He's a master manipulator, though it's never used for good.

So far, the only two guys bitching about a PnR' angle is you guys. Just sayin'    :dunno

His civil rights work is commendable, but it doesn't mean he can't be criticized for his work with the NRA. Does everyone who marched with MLK get a free pass for life, from any all criticism for any political stance they may take?

The dude chose to be part of one of the largest and most outspoken lobbying organizations in America, for one of the most politically charged causes around. I think he'd be fine with taking some heat for it.

Give me a break.  Bowling for Columbine was not Fahrenheit 9/11.  Hardly anybody has even seen it.  And god knows, Charlton Heston did not need the likes of Michael Moore to gain visibility.  For at least the last fifty years, anybody old enough to drink has known who Charlton Heston is.

And, for the most part, the segment in BfC with Heston has been roundly criticized by both supporters and detractors of Moore. It was just overboard.
Even though Heston's Alzheimer's was not known at the time of the filming, it still came off as a petty and unfair attack.

That said, Heston was still acting as President of the NRA at the time, so he was certainly "fair game" for questioning...it just should have been handled with more finesse. Moore didn't do his otherwise powerful film any favors by badgering an old man.

So...yeah, not everyone who disagrees with Heston's stance on firearms is a "Moore" fanatic.

Politics aside, Charlton Heston, John Wayne, & Jimmy Stewart are my favorite actors of all time

To post in this thread before it goes to PnR, my favorite movies of his were Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man.  I remember watching The Omega Man on the CBS Late movie after letterman was over in the early 80s in the summer.  What an outstanding movie.

Have to say, much as I detested his NRA work, a hell of an actor. Every religious holiday here in Ireland we had his movies 'the ten commandments' and 'ben hur' on the national tv station. Thankfully, history will remember him for his movie and civil rights work rather than his gun-rights work.

Gun ownership is a civil right.

Well, if it was that simple...this wouldn't be an issue. Amazingly, the 2nd amendment is open enough for interpretation. Imagine that!

You think adherents to MLK's legacy have gotten a free pass?   :-\

No man is perfect, thus I don't expect perfection from any man. MLK was a complicated man. Heston was a complicated man. Both, to varying degrees, had an impact on the society we live in. That said, anything I ever seen on the "white prostitute" angle, comes from conspiracy websites. Not the best foundation for criticizing a man, and I don't really care to delve into things that can't really be substantiated. And the plagiarizing thing also seems likely overblown.

Well, the conspiracies do serve one purpose...to attempt to tarnish the legacy of a man that many whites feared and reviled.
I mean, what two things could more damage his character in the eyes of whites that are uncomfortable with his message?

1) That his message is plagiarized, thus somehow, not valid.
2) That he beats white woman and is racist!

Strong black leader=Scary black man who beats white women and is too ignorant to write his own speeches. Perfect!

Oh, I suppose "straight dope" by Cecil Adams is better.
"Cecil Adams is a name, generally assumed to be a pseudonym..."

You'd stand behind the work of an anonymous author?
I see how you work...   ::)

I can agree with him on one thing though:
"As every reasonable observer has commented, neither King's sexual wanderings nor his scholarly misdeeds detract from his core achievement."

So beyond acknowledging that some of our most revered historical figures are in fact, slightly flawed human beings...I don't see what the point of any of this banter is.

Does there need to be a point?

Not really. I just prefer that there usually be one. Although, I can always bow out if one never comes around.
I mean, this is PBJ we're talking about.   :P

PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soylent green is MADE OF PEOPLE!!!!!

Only on BYOAC can we talk about MLK in a thread where someone else died.

And for the record my fave Heston scene is in Wayne's World 2 when hes the replacement gas station attendant/replacement actor. He does a 35 second bit part and does an amazing job. If you think about the scene its hilarious.
