Was out with all my "in-law" family (lot of them ;) ) this weekend at a popular sea-side town called Renesse.
As it rained a lot today, we went out to the local arcade, and well, I guess this is as much as a proper arcade can go these days.
They had three pins. Pirates of the Caribbean (nice, but the tilt was WAY too sharp). Rollercoaster Tycoon and...................The Addams Family !!! Loved it :)
No classics, but a very wide selection of modern-day video games (Daytona2, F-zero, HOTD4, Let's go Jungle (which I loved :) ) etc. etc. etc. the obvious DDR machine, redemption machines and they of course also had the usual money-gambling area.
The overall look of the arcade was VERY nice. It was clear they were pretty serious of giving an arcade a bit better reputation, the interior was very clean, very modern and classy.
Specially worth mentioning was the "entree":
Take a look at this:

Looks familiar ? It IMMEDIATELY reminded me of this:

I really wonder if they got the inspiration of that ! Those were the Time-Out Tunnel arcades: http://timeouttunnel.com/
The lighting of the arches was constantly changing color, but slowly so it wasn't like a cheap looking x-mas tree lighting. I really liked it !

I love Vlissingen too (=Flushings, sorry but the English word for that town always make me think of a toilet and the place doesn't deserve that ! ;))
What really is nice to see is that an arcade like that is still able and willing to invest like this. Business can't be all that bad if they are able to do so. I was also amazed at the floor ratio between money gambling and all the other games. I think 75% was still "arcade" and 25% money gambling (not allowed for under 18s).
I never gamble for money on slot machines, but one of my cousins did so we were around in that area for some time, we got offered a free drink, and they even served some hors d'oeuvre !! I was amazed by that kind of service....
I bought a card for €10,- that played all games except the money machines. Gave a 20% rebate per game compared to coins. (f.i. €0,80 per 5 ball game on the pins) That's not too bad overhere, I've seen worse...
Whichever way we think of modern day arcades. There's only one way of making them survive and that's play a couple of games :) After all, I'd love to add that Sega "Let's go Jungle" to my collection in about 20 years :D (p.s. why is that game not listed on KLOV ??)....

the last time i went to vlissingen with my dutch buddy matt was way back in 1994,most all the bars had a pinball as well as the usual fruit machines
i won the jackpot on one the fruit machines and the guy behind the bar said that i had to ring the bell next to the bar,i did as he said and then li ooked on bemused as all the customers cheered-i just bought everyone in the bar a drink :o

Yep.....never touch the bell in a bar overhere.....(is that really a Dutch custom?)
(unless you won the jackpot of course :laugh2:)
