I have a widescreen projection TV that has one of the three color guns dying. Basically, the red flickers on and off (mostly off).
Is there anything I can use any of the parts for? Any fun DIY projects or anything? The screen/lens itself is still in good shape - everything works except the red, actually. There must be something fun that can be done with a screen like that.

No ideas? Well, I guess I'll go with my other idea - haul it to the dump.

You can have fun burning stuff with the fresnel lens.
-
Dose with gasoline and apply lit match enjoy.
From a distance.

I'm in substantially the same boat. :'(

Why don't you just replace the dying gun?
-
If it's not an HDTV it's not worth nearly enough to do that. Even if it is, the used projection TV market is very low now. Everyone wants flat panels.

depends on the make but rptv tubes are like rocking horse poo,so don't go skipping it yet, mitsubishi and panansonic in particular
-
How much doe the bulbs on a RPTV like a Mitsubishi go for these days?
-
Oh the TV is definitely repairable. Unfortunately, it will cost a minimum of $200.
-
BTW, flickering doesn't sound like failure of the gun. It's failure of the driver. Much easier to fix. Failure of the gun is fading of the color that you can only fix by turning it way up.

It wasn't the driver, unfortunately. It was the gun itself, and would have been $300 or so to fix. Instead I picked up an LCD TV, same size, for $750 shipped. As a bonus, the LCD has a digital tuner, so I get lots of digital and HD channels now that I didn't before.
I had already repaired this TV a couple of times before, including replacing the convergence board, so it wasn't worth keeping around.
