Title: Need some simple lathe work done...
Post by: somunny on March 06, 2008, 08:13:02 pm
At least I think it would be simple...  if I had a lathe.

As part of my Ark project, I would like to incorporate the carrying poles into the design.  I purchased two 1 1/4" x 48" pieces of hardwood roundstock that I will most like cut down to 42", or so.  I would like 6" on each end to taper from 1 1/4" to 7/8" and round off on the end.  I would also like to have a spiral groove cut into the taper.  I would gladly pay to have this done.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.   :)

Look in the yellow pages for your local woodworker - they probably do it for you for a small fee.

Once we buy a house out here, that's one of the tools I'd like to have in my workshop...

For this project, it sounds like you really don't need a lathe... You could cut the tapers yourself using a spokeshave or chair devil. A nice one will run you $65-100 new, but you can probably find one on eBay for a lot less.

Don't know how you're going to cut the spiral. The problem there is that you need to move your cutting tool at an absolutely constant speed. If you don't, then the spiral gets wonky. A metal-cutting lathe has this capability; it's how you make custom threads. On a woodworking lathe, I suspect it would be very difficult. Any chance you could get by with a series of evenly spaced grooves? If you need a spiral, I suspect it might be easier to draw it out by hand and then carve it out with a gouge than to try to do it while the lathe is running.

I get that.  I just thought it would be cool to have someone from the board do it.
