I've been saving up a little bit and am thinking of getting a DS Lite (if I can find a non-pink one in a store around here.. :)
Anyways, what should be the first game that I get? I've always enjoyed platformers and music games, so I'm currently leaning towards New Super Mario or Elite Beat Agents.. I want something that'll last me a while, because I don't know when I'll pick up another game.. :)
IN ADDITION, I have a 5-yr-old girl who's just now getting into games (she's digging Wario Ware and Sports on a borrowed Wii currently) and I was wanting to get a game she'd have fun with. She's "typical girl" right now and enjoys pink, Barbie, princesses, cute kittens/puppies, etc, etc.. I've got a game called "I Love Kittens" on the computer that she enjoys playing, so thought she might like Nintendogs.. But I'd love to get her something that would let her draw a bit on the touch pad.. And I've heard there's some games that allow singing? She might like that..
Just looking for thoughts...
Thanx!

First off, the DS lite is the ideal choice for a 5 year old girl...and yourself. There are TONS of games for it aimed at young girls, and the prices are very reasonable for them - $10-$20. She will love Nintendogs first and foremost. Most young girls love Cooking Mama.
Elite Beat agents - that game really caught me off guard and I really like it. Like most of those Japanese made DS games though, just at the point they really hook you they jack the level of difficulty thru the roof and the game just isn't fun anymore. I got to a level in EBA in which I had to keep doing it over, and over, and over... I don't play it anymore because of that. I might have gotten a few days at most out of it.
-
Cooking Mama isn't one that I'd thought of.. I'm guessing mostly mini-games? My wife's been enjoying Wario Ware on the Wii as well, so maybe something like Cooking Mama could get her into the DS.. Hrm...
And I didn't know that about EBA... I'm at a point in my life where (like the arcade games), I want to jump in and out without a ton of struggle... Not enough time for "over and over and over"... Hrmm..
Thanx for the info...

The brain age games are a lot of fun... I have 1 and 2. I also like the Mario Kart game for it.
-
Easy might be best for me right now :)
One other thing about the game for my daughter. She's only in preschool (starts Kindergarten in the fall) so can't read... Anything that requires reading instructions without intuitive play is probably out :(
I'm definitely planning on getting an R4 or the like down the road. But I'll need some standard games up front :)
There are so many good games. I plan on getting the Brain Ages down the road. And probably Mario Kart, as well.. But if you were to only pick up ONE game.. The initial game with the system.. Would it be one of those?
Thanx!

Besides Mario Kart, there is anther one that you have to get - Mario Party DS (http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=80052&ru=290), it is quite a hoot! This isn't the first time I've participated in the Mario Party series as I've also played Mario Party 7 (another game you should check out) for the Nintendo Gamecube. this is a very staightforward game that's great for dull moments. Have fun.

For a 5 year old to enjoy also, I'll second Sharidan - Cooking Mama. But I'd also second Mario Kart as my 5 year old daughter loves racing as Princess Peach. I don't see you could go wrong with either one.
I like Brain Age 1 and 2, BUT it's really a little too advanced for 5 year olds.

Ha! Well, I've got good news and bad news (for me)...
The GOOD news is that my wife bought me a cobalt blue DS Lite for our Anniversary (3/4)!! She apparently searched all over for it as most places only had the pink ones in stock.. And, she bought me Big Brain Academy since we'd had so much fun playing the Wii version at my brother's house... So... I have a DS! :)
The BAD news is that I now feel like a schmuck because her present is SOOO much better than what I was planning (not that it's a competition or anything, mind you, and she won't care, but STILL!!!). So... Rethinking that....
Anyways, I now have a few more bucks to spend on a couple of games. I'm thinking, currently, New SMB, Mario Kart, and Nintendogs (for Abby).. Maybe Cooking Mama as well.. Or maybe just speed up my timeline and get that R4...
-
Erm... And can anyone recommend where to get an R4 and a microSD card? Cheap and reliable? :D
It appears there's an R4 shortage..? Bleh.

Check with Stobe over in buy/sell. I know he had some...

Already did. He's not selling them anymore :(
He recommended another site, but they've got them on pre-order.
Thanx!

If you don't have your heart set on an R4, I have an M3 Simply sitting around that I don't use any more. PM me if you're interested.
Cheers

Picked up Mario Kart, New SMB, and Nintendogs.. So far so fun :)
Probably at next paycheck I'll look into getting a CycloDS since the R4 is out of stock. From reviews, I think I'll stick to those 2 rather than the M3...
Thanx!

My son (5 years) has a Evolution (cyclo) and it's the best thing out there. He also has an 6Gb micro SD installed. Listen to MP3’s, watch videos (converted to dpg) or even read e-books (he cant read thou) via Moonshell is a very nice feature.
two thumbs up for the Evolution.
*EDIT: New Super Mario Bros, Mario Cart <---- must have

I have an EVO and like it. I cannot recommend it though because they are having SERIOUS quality control issues.

What kind of issues? I'm awaiting arrival of a 2GB MicroSD card and was planning on ordering a CycloDS tomorrow..? From reviews, I really should be looking at R4s or Evos, but the R4s are out EVERYWHERE..?
Thanx.

I thought they got rid of the "faulty" ones, i received a evolution from batch 2 (early desember 2006) and it stopped working after 4 weeks so i sendt it back and got a replacement from batch 3, i think they are quite "steady" from what i have read on the cyclo forums.
-
The white evo's were having an almost 50% failure rate after 1-3 months of use. They "might" have this corrected now. I say might because the teamcyclops forum mods stopped allowing people to discuss failures on the forums, or make lists of all who had defective units. I had to wait 2 months to get my replacement - others have waited longer.
There have been reports that some black Evo's have been bricking the DS they are in.
I just visited their forum to see what is up now. A few notes:
- V1.3 firmware is out and finalized
- Team Cyclops will NO LONGER replace defective cartridges directly. They defer to resellers (which only have up to a 90 day warranty).
- I still see the occasional post of someone with a dead Evo.
At this point, your odds of having a trouble free Evo are at about 75% I'd say. If you do buy one, make sure to buy from a reputable seller and verify the batch # of the cards in stock and verify their return policy. When you get the card, make sure to remove it from the DS regularly over the 1st month to check for the dead card defect - that way you can return it if you need to.

When batch 3 was FINALLY released, there was an estimated 20% failure rate.

I have a TTDS, and have been extremely satisfied with it.

I don't have any experience with any of the others, but nothing about this one has left me wanting.

Elite Beat Agents is a great game. If you like music games, unless you are some incredibly gifted musician/gamer you will have to do things over and over. It's kind of par for the course, but EBA is a game I highly recommend. Maybe I have some advantage, since I play an instrument, but seriously...it rocks.
-
I have the DSTT as well, and the EWIN GBA loader in the bottom slot. There's nothing it can't play, and it was very inexpensive.

Can either of you guys tell me whether Contra 4 works with the DSTT?
The GBATemp review says that the game wouldn't boot.
Thanks.
