Title: darn, light gun just stopped working!
Post by: vertygo on February 04, 2008, 11:56:10 am
Man, I just moved my cab into the house.. was working perfectly, then suddenly the second lightgun stopped working!

I switched the gun1 and gun2 connectors, and the same gun failed on the new port.. so I'm thinking the jamma board is fine, it's just the gun. I thought maybe it might be the IR sensor, but then I realized it doesn't even trigger the 'white screen' flash or sound effect.

Any help on how to diagnose what's wrong or how to fix it would be very much appreciated.

Difficult to diagnose it until you tell us what cab it is, what lightguns you have etc etc etc... At the moment, I'd guess it's a wire break in the gun cable somewhere. Probably the ground line.

Sorry, didn't realize it would make a difference.. it's a Police Trainer cab.. not sure what guns they are.. pretty generic looking, no recoil action.

Thanks Fozzy, I assumed it would involve dis-assembling it, just wanted to make sure first.

Thanks Fozzy, I assumed it would involve dis-assembling it, just wanted to make sure first.

Start with taking the gun apart.... There's nothing complex inside them, it may be that the cable has just come unplugged inside the gun. It happens sometimes.

If that doesn't cure the problem, then remove the cable from the gun and the machine and buz through each wire with a meter. you should find the one that's gone down.

If that still doesn't find the fault then try reflowing the solder on the plug inside the gun, where it connects to the input output PCB. The solder joint on them has a habit of breaking at that point.
