Title: LCD is acting strange
Post by: tommy on January 16, 2008, 10:43:50 pm
Every now and then when I turn my LCD screen on after a few seconds it will turn black and not show anything on screen, this is not while doing anything other than browsing the internet. When it loses it's picture the monitor is still getting power and I would press the power button on the monitor off and then on again, the picture will come back for a few more seconds and then shuts off again. After doing this 8 or 9 times the monitor will finally stay on. Sometimes I will have to adjust the monitors fresh rate higher or lower and it will also not shut off anymore.

This is very confusing to me and I'm not sure if it's my video card causing trouble or if it's the LCD. I think it seems more like it's the LCD but it's so hard to tell since the video card is also making the monitor go.

Also while in a PC game I will sometimes lose video signal and will have to reboot the PC to get a signal back. This leads be to believe it's the video card but the other problem leads me to believe it's the monitor.

Ideas? Suggestions?

This is probably a stupid question, but is the monitors vga connector tight on the video card?
It may have the same connector on the cord, on the monitor end. Check both.

Also, if you have another PC, try swapping the monitors for a while.  If it behaves the same on the other PC it's more than likely something with the monitor.

So are you running the LCD at VGA, SVGA, XGA... or is it at CGA...

Sounds like the LCD is not recognizing the horizontal syc pulse. This is what tells the A/D board the resolution you are using.

if unit has some age to it , suspect a failing 'lytic cap or two in the smps.
the "lose pic after just on" is a typical symptom.
replace any cap that is "domed" and/or with signs of leakage

I don't have another PC anymore to test either of the parts in question, and I don't want to go out and buy one of these parts and find it was the other causing the problem. Somehow I feel I will have to do just that anyway.

This is a problem that is just too hard to pin point or for anyone to really give good advise on without actually seeing what's going on, I guess.

specific long distance troubleshooting can be a challenge .  if ur comfortable taking the back off the unit,
post a decent pic .  the board may look familiar and might have a better idea of what/where the fault may be ... ?

or find a computer tech that is familar with monitor repair, a tv repairman or a knowlegable Ham Radio Operator...

service lit can be $$$ or simply unavailable . all electronic devices follow the same rules of physics .
knowing how they work can eliminate the need for literature ( or at least know where to find FREE info  ;) )

I'd have to take the back off the unit then take a pic, then put it back to see what I'm doing to post a pic back on the forum. ;D  Not to mention taking apart half or the cab in the process.  :banghead:

I might take some time and do that later on. Thanks.

I know by me taking a picture won't mean for sure anyone can help anymore then what has been done so far but I think I want to take a look back there anyway.

I also recently took out the video card and gave it a look and it looks fine from the outside, but that does not mean something wrong still is not going on there.

I found the problem, and it was not as obvious as it would have seemed from the problem I described. The power supply was about to die and was not able to run all the PC hardware and the monitor or video card was showing signs of problems because of it.
