Title: Final "Grail" Acquired
Post by: FrizzleFried on January 07, 2008, 01:49:29 am
Welp,  I finally found a Tempest upright locally (well,  50 miles from here).

Right side has some corner damage at the back bottom as well as some slight moisture swelling at the top and bottom.  I am CONSIDERING replacing the entire side though i'd like opinions as to the feasability of removing the side art, using wood filler to smooth things out,  then apply a new side art piece?

The art is good enough and it's not pealing or anything so I may just leave it alone and put that side against a wall or something....I am not sure yet.

The marquee "unfortunately" needs to be replaced...the usual spot along the bottom edge is tore.  The CPO is in bad shape and needs replacing.

The monitor exhibits very intermittent color loss (cold solder joint somewhere).  A whack on the side rectifies that issue.

The monitor also exhibits some "waviness" when certain colors are on screen, etc.  Highscore list, etc. is especially bad but gameplay (blue) is pretty stable.

I'm ordering a cap kit from Bob Roberts and will be also picking up a LV2000 low voltage upgrade kit for it.  I picked up a big blue from Bob as well,  but won't add it unless the waviness isn't rectified with the cap kit.

Here are some photos of it before I brought it in and cleaned it up.

Let me be the first to say

 :applaud: :o :applaud:

Awesome! I love it. Your collection has become quite nice - why not take some shots as it is now? I'd like to see it.

As for the water, would Nostrebor's excellent write up do you any good?

The thought of replacing the sideart, hurts my wallet!

Thanks Lew,

I will take a shot of the whole gameroom when I get the Tempest in to it's new home.  I have a cupboard the prior owner installed on one wall that has to be moved up to fit a cab under it.  After that I need to hang a few more marquees,  pictures, etc...then the photos.

If I decide to restore the water damaged side,  I'll likely cut out the water damaged wood.  As it stands,  it's no terribly bad or anything,  so I think I will keep it until I have some $$ saved up to buy side art, etc.  A New CPO and marquee are on the agenda though.

I need: Tempest marquee,  Tempest CPO and Star Wars marquee...any suggestions as to where to pick these up?  I see Arcadeshop sells them all,  but I've been warned against the arcadeshop SW (and I imagine Tempest) marquees as their "black" isn't really black...and light shines through a bit.

I wish This Old Game had em...

Lucky bastige.  :notworthy:
If I were you though I'd just wait for a converted cab in great condition to pop up for cheap and then just transfer the guts.

Heres a question for you frizz...

Sideart: how important is it? I love having a pristine machine, but when you put them next to each other - whats the point of sideart? Especially with a machine like Tempest having full side art.

Side art is important...right after marquee and CPO... but I understand what you mean.  I just like having "fully restored" or as close as possible...games.

But yes,  it's WAY down the list of "stuff to do" to my cabs.

Thanks....this hobby has really taken hold.  It's only been some 15-16 months since I built my first MAME cabinet.  I am particularly happy with my "wall-o-Atari".  4 XY games and counting.

I am now only going to collect games that MAME can't emulate 100% correctly (XY, special controllers, etc).

I'm still amazed that the majority of this stuff was local to frikkin Idaho, AND all within the last year. It really makes me sick... :P ;D

That just proves that all the newish people in the hobby that always say "there are no cabs in my area, nowhere, just not in this state" need to have more patience.  Pretty much no matter where you are there are good cabs locally - it just takes time to work your way into the proper contacts.

It's a double edged sword around here.  I can pick up cabs (when they show up) for pretty cheap,  but selling them is damn near impossible.

I can't sell my restored VS cabinet for $500.  The best offer I got was $200.  I paid $300 for the damn thing myself.

Some of my deals though: Joust for $50, Space Invaders for $150, Asteroids for $175, Asteroids Deluxe for $200, Star Wars for $300,  Tempest for $350.

Of course some of them needed a little work... I estimate they cost me $120 for Joust, $250 for Space Invaders (with multikit), $230 for Asteroids, $250 for Asteroids Deluxe, $650 for Star Wars (with ESB kit), and Tempest is going to cost be about $500 total when it's done.

Anytime the wife starts to ---smurfette--- I bring up the fact that I could have gotten in to Harley Davidsons instead of arcade machines.

this is why i am screwed i have games ,my old car hobby, and building a custom harley from scratch. i pretty much have no defense when the wife gets mad. all i can do is tell her "dont worry about what i do, worry about what you do!". she REALLY hates that. ;D
