Title: I admit defeat and ask for your guidance with my lightgun
Post by: Extreme8 on December 29, 2007, 04:05:19 pm
I just upgraded from MAME 107 to 122 and I've not been able to figure out how to get my Act-Labs gun working.
I got my Ultimarc Ultrastiks and USB trackball working with no problems but the gun is making me look stupid.
I've looked at the wiki and searched everything I could think of.

If anyone knows of a guide or has an idea that might get me moving in the right direction I would appreciate the help.

Does the Act-Lab guns work in Windows (ie: outside of Mame)?   I believe the mouse pointer should move to the spot in which you are aiming/shooting.

or

Are you having trouble with calibrating the game for use?

or

Are you having trouble figuring out how to plug in your light gun to your computer?

Basically, you need to be more descriptive in your quest for help .......

You're right - very vague description of the issue.
Basically, it's a TV version of the gun, works great under 107. Doesn't do anything under 122 except fire directly into the center of the screen.
Seems that the trigger works, but I can't get it to calibrate. If I use the trackball to aim and the trigger to fire it works correctly.
Any suggestions?

Take a look at your mame.ini file controller sections.  Lightgun entries should look similar to below

#
# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
ctrlr
lightgun                  1
multimouse                1

#
# CORE INPUT AUTOMATIC ENABLE OPTIONS
#
adstick_device            lightgun
lightgun_device           lightgun

In 118 or 119 they changed a lot of the lightgun code.  Guns are actually detected as guns not mice.  I have lcd topguns but the basics should be the same for the act labs.  Hoepfully this gets you going.

Thanks, that did it.
I had to remap my trackball, but that was a minor annoyance.
I knew the lightgun handling had changed but I haven't done much with the machine for the last year or so and I've been out of the loop for a while.

Now to figure out the off screen reloads. I changed the setting in the .ini but I knew it had to be more complicated than that.

Any advice?

Once I get this figured out I'm going to have to do a write up for the Wiki.

Is there a specific game you are having reload problems with?  I don't think off screen reload works in lethal enforcers but I just tried and works fine in area 51.  I think the lcd topguns handle off screen reloading differently than the act lab guns.  There are some settings I can change in the control panel for smog's driver to help with off screen reload.  You may have to wait for someone with act lab guns to help, sorry.

I've been considering jumping to a pair of Topguns for quite some time now
If I can't work this out It'll give me a valid reason.
Thanks for the help.

Though I don't have a pair myself...staring at the product information (http://www.hkems.com/product/xbox/LCDTopGun.htm) f(or hours on end I notice that they seem to be very versatile for the price of them. I looked on ebay and it looks like they're about 50 bucks each, which, is cheaper than the Act-Labs.
