I was playing around with track and field, and I see in the dip settings a setting called "run like hell cheat". Anyone know what this is, or how it works?

nope. only cheats i remember are using a pencil bridged between your index finger and ring finger.
The other cheat I never figured out...something about crossing the finish line at acertian time and it gives you a special time for that event. something like 1 second.. i really don't remember very much about it..

You hold down that button, and it makes you run fast, as if you were hitting the 2 buttons like hell.
So, just hold that button down and watch the magic happen!

I tried setting a button for that control through the dip settings, but it keeps kicking back to "none". Does it have to be any special key? My poor spacebar on my laptop is taking a severe beating!

you need to enable cheats first...
cheat = 1 or check the box in mame32
then map a button to it in the UI (tab menu).
I use it and have never looked in the dip switch settings, this is how I configure it, works for me. Only caveat is the 1 button makes player 1 and 2 "run". Not a problem for a single player game, but can be for a 2 player game. I have a source change that will add 2 "run like hell buttons", separate for players 1 and 2.

anybody remember the bird trick? that's where if you qualify on the javelin on the first try, on the second try you hold the shoot button down the entire shot.....the javelin goes straight up and hits a bird and comes down....you get some points or something out of it. Or maybe it was just good for showing off to the dude who whupped your tail in the first race cause he used his pencil to cheat. ;)

My version, it's a UFO and it gives 1000 points but still fails to qualify you. But I've seen both the bird and UFO listed. I'm new to Mame (like in the last week) so I don't know how to do anything with it beside enter "mame trackfld" through dos...

nah, it swear its a chandelier. i dunno about your version, but i always had a chandelier. When i played in the arcades back in the 80's, it was a chandelier. when it crashes to the ground, it makes a smahing of glass sound. ::)
you must have the swedish version. ;)

I'm from Canada and actually played this game (alot!) in the arcades when I was a kid. It was definetly a bird on the machines we had here...

On a related subject, anyone know of proper technique for button mashing in this game? In doing some searches on track and field I came up with one site that mentioned sixfinger and eightfinger techniques being used by advanced players but no explanation of how it works...
