Title: Atari Quadrascan Color XY Monitor - CRT replacement?
Post by: galaga69 on November 13, 2007, 10:18:24 pm
Quick question for the XY monitor experts - The Atari Color Quadrascan XY monitor manual states that the monitor is based on the Wells Gardner 6100-series monitors, built to Atari specifications. The manual also states that the CRT the monitor employs is simply a 100° off-the-shelf raster CRT. Assuming they're not lying outright, can a Quadrascan monitor with severe burn-in receive a standard raster CRT replacement and be good as new? Something tells me it's not that simple.

Second question - Is the same thing about the raster CRT true with the WG 6100?

Any insight would be appreciated.

And yes, I did check to make sure this same question hasn't been posted 437 times already...  ;)

as long as the pin outs and size of the replacement crt is the same as orig . should be of little problem .
the important part is the deflection yoke . the horiz/vert windings will be the same ( at least on those i have seen )
so use orig yoke .

with tv/monitor yokes ,the horiz winding is a few micro-henries whereas the vert windings are in mili-henries.

I asked about something similar once (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64978.0)

The guy that answered that knows what he's talking about.  Listen to him.

There's nothing unusual about the picture tubes for these monitors (Atari/6100),  standard off shelf tube that's been used in all sorts of applications over the years, vector and raster monitors and TV's.

The yoke is unique, and you would have to swap that over to a replacement tube.

"New" (although sometimes they really are "reman") tubes have been available right along.  But I am starting to hear rumors that the usual tube vendors have exhausted stock and are listing them as "backordered" with no scheduled in stock dates.  The common part numbers for these tubes are still listed as being available, but I know somebody that called Richardson for one and was told not in stock.   If you want to go the new tube route, you might have to do a little chasing.

I believe there are actually some TVs out there that do have the proper deflection angle... the trick is knowing which ones.
