Title: CP button 4/6 position order?
Post by: TheDriver on November 02, 2007, 03:20:08 am
Do the buttons on a panel with 4 or six buttons run in a universal order or are they CP specific? Ie. buttons 1-3 on top row of a six button CP with 4-6 on the bottom row or do they run top row 1,3,5 bottom row 2,4,6 ?

Same with a 4 button CP, 1-2 on the top row with 3-4 on the bottom?

They're both universal as well as CP/game specific.

Think about rewiring a house.  Most people will want to have light switches that control the lights near the entry of each room (universal); but the owner wants to have all the switches right near the front door (CP/game).

Look at SF vs Tekken vs MK.  Buttons all over the place. The buttons only do what the game lets them do.  For SF, it is 123 for punches, 456 for kicks.  Due to the limitations of the JAMMA standard, the kick buttons are handled separately using the kick harness.

I have both a SF game and a Tekken game.  When I'm done with hooking both boards up, I will have the tekken game use the SF layout.  The active buttons from SF will be 12/45.  Buttons 3 & 6 will do nothing.

Hopefully that answers your question.

I personally don't like 1 2 and 3 at the top. Most games use only 1 2 or 3 and I don't like having to jump over a set of buttons to press the most commonly used buttons. I flipped my ordering so the bottom buttons are 1 2 and 3 and the top buttons are 4 5 and 6. The only downfall I've encountered is that I have to switch the controls for all street fighter games. Good thing each game can save its own controller configuration file. So its no big hitch.

That brought up a good follow-up question for you TheDriver.  Are you talking about a MAME CP or a dedicated arcade CP?

Many thank's for the replies guy's, curious as to the way other's had them set up. Having never had a look at a cp with more than 3 button's I was not sure how to go about setting them up. It's for an upcoming dedicated cab jamma project, I have most of the part's except my jamma harness & monitor but am reluctant to post a project announcement because it will probably sit for a while without activity.

Regards.

If it's a dedicated cab with only one game, then go with the standard button placement for that game.  I too have a work in progress, and like you, it's taking a while to do.
