Title: How does my marquee art look?
Post by: billpa on October 30, 2007, 04:31:56 pm
Im just starting to play with the overall design of a cab I am building. The size is not firmed up yet but here is what I have come up with so far.

Number two is sweet. The red flare in the background really sets it off and provides more contrast to your text. And I love the addition of the js...

The second one looks really cool.  My only suggestions are nit-picky really.  If the red from the background had some transparency to it seeing the grid through it may be cool.  This next sentence needs to be worded very carefully to avoid any off color humor (not that I don't like off color humor myself)...  The parts of the joystick look out of scale to each other, I think a narrower and slightly shorter shaft would maybe look more proportionate.

Looks great... but how about making the E into a pac-man character?  :)

I definitely like the first one better... looks good, nice design.  Try to keep it uncluttered like that.

Thanks for the input guys! I am leaning towards the simpler version myself although I do like the joystick. I did a couple of more revisions...one with the thinner "shaft"  ;) It looks a bit aliased but I think that is just a byproduct of exporting a jpeg from Illustrator

This one adds the red flare but loses the joystick.

one vote for the second revision of the design without the joystick - seems the best of both ideas...

Something about the M and the U are crying for a concept... it's not clear yet, but there is potential on those letters to add somethign like a pac man ghost on the U and a combat tank on the M or some such.

Definitely like the glowing red better on the newer ones.  I am in the air about the joystick.  It looks a little plain without it, but kind of odd with it.

Ok...so I readdressed the joystick. Making it smaller without a white outline helps alot. Then I moved the burst background so it comes from the ball of the joystick :D I added a little tagline because I thought it need it. Thoughts?

Man, I dunno. I'm fond of the thicker shaft white outlined stick myself. I think it fits better with the overall look of the logo; the non-stroked gradient stick seems incongruous for some reason...

I do like the new placement of the red burst and the addition of the tag.

Like the tagline.
Don't like the no-outline stick and ball
Think I like the old burst location better.

I think that a shaft somewhere between the two previous sizes and shorter with the outlined ball and shaft would be nice looking.  I'm curious what the burst would look like from the center.

Hello Billpa,

here's my impression...

so far, I prefer the version of post#6 with the joystick on it and the outline on the stick ball.

For the trial you did on post #10
- removing the ball outline :
the ball doesn't have the same style as the rest of the marquee.
I would put back the whitle outline.
- change the burst location.
It doesn't looks right.  Its origin is from the stick ball, but it passes under the "O".

So my recommendation is try the one from post#6.
- increase the width of the shaft (leave the ball size as it is)
- try to define a bit more the "M" and "U" (a bit less solid, add 2 small triangles for the M and
remove a thin U shape section for the U, but keep it chubby...)

I would also stay away from changing some character to pacman or ghost, unless you're a huge fan of pacman.
This is to keep your marquee to the essential...

Take of discard my suggestions as you see fit.

Looking good!
Jay

Wow.. that second background is very nice.  Have you tried keeping that Background and adding a smaller burst on the Joystick top?
