Seems to me like the command line version of MAME 0.120 will run fine on that machine.

Agree.  Most games will play fine; only a few won't, but pretty much all of these wouldn't on any computer anyway.  (Gauntlet Legends etc.)

What games are you looking at?

I wasn't interested in any specific game I just wanted to know if my hard ware specs would be better fit for a specific build of mame.. as it stands i'm currently using .120b and no complaints really.. just wanted to know if i would see any type of performance gain using a different version

Sounds like more of a "my willie is bigger than your willie" kinda post :laugh2:.  Given that that PC is about as fast as you can get without  spending mega $$ and probably faster than the guys who write mame use anyhow.

and yes your willlie sounds bigger than mine.

Am I having a bad day?

I think you may be, diverdown... I didn't get that from either of his posts. :dunno

Anywho, side question, is the standard way of thinking when someone says "play mame roms" that the assumption is they include CHD's as well?

I didn't assume, I asked "which games?". ;)

 :soapbox:
Please do not imply that all CHD games run the slowest.  Over half the chds (that run at all) will run fine on his system.  Some chds will run okay on my 3 year old system.  When the laserdisk games come on line, even more CHD games will run fast enough.  And almost as many non CHD games as CHD games run too slow on any computer today.  It's not the CHD that slows it down, it's the CPU, GPU, sound-PU, and other chips that slow it down.
[soapbox=off]

Sorry mate, I'm very new to this whole thing. I wasn't trying insinuate that's what you were asking when I asked about the CHD's.

Interesting to hear about the CHD's, though. I just assumed they were just big slow clunky games since their sizes are usually pretty big.

Can you elaborate please? I'd love to play DL in mame...

No problem, you're saying what many people say, I was just having a bad day when I read your post and hopped on my soapbox. ;D  (In saying it on in posts like this, more people will think the same, and pass it on, etc.)

"Size isn't everything." ;)
CHD = Compressed Hunks of Data.  (Used to be "Compressed Hard Drives" but then games like the dancedance that have CDs were added.)  Mame easily accesses the CHDs faster on modern harddrives than the original arcade HDs (and especially CDs), and doesn't need to load the whole CHD into memory or anything.

Laserdisks are like analog CDs, and if-and-when these game are added to mame, the LDs will be held in CHDs.  And since the original LD games used about the same powerful hardware as other games released at the same time period, and CHDs on modern HDs can be read faster than the original LDs, modern computers should be able to emulate the games fine.

MameDev is slowly (http://aarongiles.com/?p=188) trying to convert from the analog LDs to the digital world.  Apparently they are going to be very big CHDs.  But don't bug them about it, as bugging them usually delays it.
