Title: Microswitches Are Way Too Clicky
Post by: fjl on October 15, 2007, 04:47:36 pm
I found my joystick and Happ buttons to be way too noisy. Even my computer's mouse doesn't click that loud. So I've been fooling around with the microswitches and I figured out a way to make the click sound go away completely! Plus the microswitches now seem to have a way better response time as well. Feels way smoother. Seems like I can press the button a lot faster unlike before where you have to wait for the button to return back up by hearing the click return noise. I have yet to try leaf switches but I'm thinking this is how they must feel.

I'm still testing this out but so far it seems to work pretty good. Anyone else done this that I don't know about? These are the Cherry Microswitches by the way.

Well I can't go into detail right now since I to leave for work in a few minutes  :-\
When I get back from work.

But it doesn't involve bending of the small metal parts or anything or damaging it in any way. It certainly does feel way better though since the throw distance is a lot shorter. Feels really smooth.

So you made them feel more like japanese buttons?

You mean like Randy's Micro-Leaf switches? (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=71675.0)

Is this a patent pending issue? Top government secret?
Enquiring minds want to know..

Sorry guys, didn't mean to keep you guys in suspense.

I don't know about them feeling like Japanese buttons but if those have no feeling of a microswitch then yeah.

I just did another test. I have one button with a microswitch, one with my modified microswitch and one without a microswitch.

The one with the microswitch is obviously clickly and loud. The one without a microswitch feels hollow and noiseless without the microswitch. Then I tried a button with my modified microswitch and it feels exactly like the button with no microswitch. So if you want to know how it feels and sounds modified then remove a microswitch and press it. It feels exactly like that but with a slightly stronger spring. Of course you get a faster and better response cause of the shorter throw distance of the button.

I'll take pictures and do a walkthrough for you guys so just give me time. I have to set up my digicam and write the tutorial then you guys can try it out. One things for sure, it's tricky to do and requries a lot of adjusting. But once you get it, it's easy to do it to the rest of them.

Wow this is brutal!

I want to know also before I spend the money to swap out all my micros for leaf switches. I hate the clicking too.

Hey guys, I figured out cold fusion! Free energy for everyone forever! I have a softball game to run to and then I have a ton of tv to catch up on so I'll get back to you on the details at some point.

If I send you $200 in cash to the South African Embassy now to help you get them produced will I get $500 in parts back in just 3 weeks time?

Now let's not be silly.  There is nothing difficult about ColdFusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ColdFusion) --  any programmer should be able to figure that out.   ;D

Wow, didn't realize so many people where interested in this. I though I was the only one that hated the clickyness of the cherry microswitches. Well unfortunately I was just pulling all of your legs. No such modification can ever be done. Your stuck with your loud and noisy buttons!

I'm just pulling your legs. I went through it and took many pics on step by step on how to do it. Now I just have to photoshop the pics and write notes on them so you guys can easy follow them. I'll do that later today when I get back from work. I know I'm just leaving you guys in suspense again. :banghead:

But don't worry I'll have it for you guys later tonight, promise

I just received a Sanwa JLF and was surprised how clicky it is... My Happs Supers with Cherry microswitches seem to be a lot less clicky than the Sanwa. For some reason I had it in my head that the Sanwa would be less clicky. Oh well!

But Randy claims to have done it. I'd like to see a thorough review from someone who's actually used his leaf-switches, but the initial reports from a select few who have claimed to use them seem promising.

*Link to his thread is a few posts up, but I'm too lazy to look for it now.

I'm usinga JLF with an Xbox 360 controller hack and with no common ground I can't use the JLF's pcb. I took it out and replaced with 4 cherry microswitches that fit quite good. It is quieter now, and perhaps even moreso after this mod ;)
