I have a project I just finished. What is your opinion?

Way cool. :applaud:
You need to ditch the cables going to the keyboard etc.
Do you have some fans anywhere?
And you need to play Moon Patrol the right way :laugh2:
Well done. Very Unique.

I'm still learning how to use MaLa without the keyboard/mouse. I have to cheat for now.
There is one fan on the (exposed) power supply but honestly, the thing doesn't get hot. I recycled a miscut piece for the bottom and it's full of holes. You can see from one of the pics above. Speakers and volume knob, power switch, and a power indicator light are all a big part of the bottom of this table. It's pretty stable somehow, by the way.
Is that orientation wrong for Moon Patrol? I have a lot of adjusting to do.
I have never beaten Moon Patrol.

I like the look on top, nice and clean. Any thoughts on staining the bottom portion? A nice red oak would look good.
Also, what are the legs made out of, they don't look very sturdy? Gonna add any bracing to it?
-
I was thinking along the lines of simple retro graphics like this:
I designed it so that the legs could always be shortened if I wanted to but it's rather sturdy and perfect for standing height as is. Although I do admit while testing a game of Robotron it did scoot around a bit from the action. I could always just hack the legs down a bit, increasing stability with every inch of height removed.
It's a design decision that I admit is a bit unusual but I sometimes purposefully break from the utilitarian and embrace the esoteric as a design ethic. If I got a couple stools then I could shorten it but I don't know, I kinda like it tall and spartan. I may not even paint it or stain it at all either, it matches my apartment like it is. Everyone who has seen it has mentioned this issue though.
-
Very nice design. Clean and simple! :applaud:
In regards to the leg stability, would you consider putting a bottom shelf about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way up from the floor to connect the legs? That should cut down on the scooting a little as most of the action from the top would be absorbed by the shelf as a whole rather than pass out through the individual legs. The potential downside would be that it would start to look like furniture if you didn't like that look and it could become a potential collection spot for things such as magazines. Depending on how sturdy, it might double as a foot rest when you need to give a knee a slight break in position!
-
I like it better without the paint. It looks like a classy piece of furniture.
How tall is it?
-
3 feet tall to the top.
This is what it might look like with braces:

I would say go for the braces... especially if this thing is going to see multiple players at some point.

Did you consider dropping the current four legs, rounding the corners a little, and use an old bar stool or something similar, ie. a single leg? If instable you could screw a larger round or square piece of material on the ground below it. I think that would look nicer, to be honest...
-
I really like this thing - you don't see stuff like this around here too often. I wonder if there is a way to build one so it looks like a normal table and the top is hinged to reveal the controls... or something. Very nice job! Oh, I like the black top/natural wood look. Maybe stain the wood and put some poly on there but that's as far as I would go - no paint.

I'll probably build a removable box top so that everything is concealed. The control top is already hinged. Then I might need to cut the thing down a bit, as that would add maybe 6" to the height. Yeah honestly I may only give it a simple light varnish.

Sounds like a lot of retro fitting. If I ever make another one...
-
Very nice. Gives a new look to the retrogame. I like the wood natural. Maybe a light stain and polyurethane.

I futzed around with the shelf idea from above.

I think I like the plain braces you did over the shelf, but that's what I was thinking of.
-
Plain braces look cleaner and the shelf could get JUNKY.
-
Nice solution for those very short on space. Would make a cool format for a jukebox too. I can't honestly say I'm loving the weird button layout though.
-
Really a interesting piece that’s for sure, I would have to agree with dire, for the ver controls i would have gone with a inline 3 and for the hor 4 buttons 2 top 2 bottom (but hey to each there own). Does it wobble at all when playing certain games?? cause when i have friends come over to play the SF's if it wasn't a full size cab it would shift all over the place. Props for the style.
-
The button layout is like this - for landscape games and co-op, there are the two front defender button layouts plus the 8-way joystick. The reason for this was so that there would be enough buttons to play whether you are right of left handed regardless of game, and buttons are cool. Additionally, for portrait orientation there are enough buttons for games that don't make use of joystick and this too can be utilized by right or left handed players by using some of the defender buttons. Frankly, since everything is mounted directly on the table, it's a pretty flexible layout for lots of games so far. It's really working out very well!
-
Looks interesting. Just don't like the idea that if a drink gets spilled on top of it, it could mean death since it could easily leak through the buttons and joysticks.

Hmmm...
Yes. I see now.
My friends are a bunch of drunks... this could pose a problem.
-
There seem to be a few problems that you are addressing. Fix those, and that should be a pretty sweet setup. Nice job.
-
Bottom shelf made of plexi for drinks. How about that?
Braces are already on it, and looks exactly like the mockup above. I'll post that pic soon enough.
