It's a Namco reunion cabinet, is it not? That version allows continues.
-
Man, I've gotten 750 tons of time. I actually finished the first level once and hit 1000.

AH, ok, I thought you meant Ontario, Canada. Regardless, the reunion machines allows continues, so there you go.....

On an original Galaga machine, there is always the possibility someone used the "no-fire" glitch.

he diden't use the no-fire glitch they were firing at him
this guys was dodging left and right

It was a "continue" game. It's utterly asinine that continue games doesn't reset the high score each continue OR at least prevent you from putting your high score in.
-
I like what some pins do, notably ST:TNG where you have a separate high score table for people who use continues and you cant get the "grand champion" score when you use more than one.
-
Also - if it allows fast fire, it's much easier game. I can play the fast version of Galaga till it breaks.
-
It actually isn't very dificult to roll the galaga machine without using any tricks (no fast fire or the make them stop shooting trick). The hard part was to strategically get as close to a million without rolling it back to 0. Hence you see scores of 999,750.
The trick,
- always double up your ship.
- shoot as many as you can while they are trying to set up formation.
- always kill the guys on the sides and work your way towards the middle.
- maximize you shot to kill ratio.
Often on the much higher stages, you would almost have no Galaga guys in formation if your hit rate was high as they were circling (before formation). You peg of the 5 - 10 leftover and your done.
-
Yeah I saw that continue thing on a reunion cab at the local putt putt. I just thought, "WTF is the point?"

I've heard you should play player 2, as it shows 7 digits.

Erm, no it's not. It's great incentive to continue... you know, put more quarters into the machine? :)

I disagree, my highest scores were obtained as a single ship after I lost my first double.

Me too. I was sooo much better at that game before I knew you could double up your ship. Now it seems i just try double up and get killed for my efforts.
-
I'm a double up guy.
I like to destroy them quickly.
And as RayB mentioned, if you want a REAL score then play using player 2.

I heard this too, but never tried. You'd have to put in 2 quarters though. Quarters were just so hard to come by and I know I never had enough of them. :)

Whenever I'd lose one of my double ships on the higher levels, it would always take a while to double up again. It was more challenging due to the loss of that extra fire power and I always felt uneasy until I doubled up again. I'm impressed if you were able to roll it using one ship only. :notworthy:
-
You have to admit that's a really unique feature for such a simple game... You're forced to "gamble" your lives for a chance at more firepower. But you also end up twice as wide and more likely to collide with something. Such a brilliantly simple yet perfect game design. It's no wonder the game endures to this day.
-
I usually only double once until the game slows down again around level 12 or so. If I have an extra life, I'll double up again. The biggest benefit of a double us the bonus screen. It is damn near impossible to get the perfect bonus with one ship. I've never done it at least.
-
I've gotten perfect with one ship but you really have to be perfect - no margin for error. Doesn't happen often.
I'll tend to double up when I can but I think the faster rounds are definitely better played with only one ship. It would be really cool if you could send your second ship back to the bench without losing a life.
-
I'm in the no doubleship camp.
Kill the red guys first!!!!
-
I used to be scared of doubling up, but then my sixth "Galaga sense" kicked in and now doubles are the only way to go. Just kill 'em all before they shoot back!
My own PB is only about 300k, but still respectable.
-
i tend to be double until i lose a ship or two, and then continue as single. mind you, im not very good at the game so by the time i get to 100k it's too frantic for me to bother getting a double again! there's no danger of me running out of digits for my scores ;)
-
lol same here my high score is about 250k

I reckon that one simply hits a critical point in Galaga at around 200-300k. This difficulty just gets too hard for mere mortals like us, at least on standard Galaga. But you never know, practice makes perfect ....
