Title: CRT vs CGA
Post by: Austin.Wolff on September 09, 2007, 07:09:53 pm
Seeing as arcade monitors at 27" seem to be in the $500 range, I figured I'd look at 27" crt monitors, which you can basically pick up for you.  Do you figure its worth it to use until I decide to buy an arcade monitor?  How different is the picture?

Oh, and I more or less figured this out.  I booted up mame on my laptop and 27" TV, looks pretty good.  Nothing I'm going to be running is THAT odl, so I think I can get by.

I say get whatever you can live with.  If this is your first cab and you are playing mostly newer (90’s) games, I say go with a TV.  No use paying $300 extra if you just want to play the games and have fun.  Much cheaper, and usually easier to set up.  May be a little tricky to mount in a cab, but it can be done easily.

If you want authentic arcade resolution, get a CGA arcade monitor.  You will probably spend lots of time experimenting with proper resolutions and settings for each game.

Personally, I have a 27" TV in my first MAME cab and I am very happy with it.

what did you use, S-Video (most older TVs) or straight to VGA or DVI (recent TVs have those now)?

S-video.  The screen was blurry for windows etc but using a front end it looks great.
