Title: Air Hogs Apache Havoc Helicopter
Post by: Dartful Dodger on September 04, 2007, 02:39:47 pm
Air Hogs Apache Havoc Helicopter (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2486857&cp=&sr=1&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2254197&origkw=air+hogs&kw=air+hogs&parentPage=search)

This thing is great.  They are really simple to fly. Up/Down Left/Right when you turn them they go in that direction and forward or back depending on the rotation.  Once I got use to how it handles, I got frustrated with how it flies forward while turning, so I put three thumb tacks in it's nose.  Now it's always flying forward, to hover I just have to put it in a spin.  I bought two more and all day Yesterday my friends and I were playing helicopter Joust.

These things don't break.  You can rip them, but a little Scotch tape and they are back in the sky.

The only bad thing about them is there is only 3 channels so you can only have three in the sky at a time.

What's the infrared for?

What's the infrared for?

Depends on which you're talking about.  They operate on IR (from the controller to the Heli) and they have an IR "gun" pointed out the front of the heli that you can shoot at your opponents with.  Getting hit will cause you to spin for a few seconds to show that you've been shot.

They have battle Apaches which come in a two helicopter set that can shoot at each other.  I don't think the individual helicopters have the light guns though.

Crashwg have you used the battle Apaches?  The ones I have are really hard straighten out, I can't imagine having to line up a shot at another one.

Is there triggers (like L & R on a playstation controller) on the remote?  Those are what you fire with so if you've got them then you can probably shoot.  If you do, an additional test you could do would be to look at the front of the heli through a digi or video cam's viewfinder while pressing the fire button to see if there is a IR light there.

I'm sure you're right though.  I haven't looked into them close enough to see that there's different models.

I had one of those things a while back.  It was really cool, but after only a few flights and charges the battery would last very long.  Then again I think I ended up with a cheap Chinese ripoff from ebay.

I have one of the Picco Z indoor choppers, and a pair of other brand ones I got offa woot.com...

FUN toys, especially if you have a nice high ceiling space at your house...

I bought the Picco version too. I think about a year ago or so.  Loved that little chopper. Survived plenty of crashes and even my 4 year old abusing it. It suddenly stopped working with electrical problems though.

This is the other type I have....

flies pretty much the same as the Picco but is plastic instead of foam.  Fun to torture the cats with  ;D

I have both this one and the Apache heli from the first post.  They're both really fun, although this one will not stop spinning unless you hold right on the controller.  I don't know if the adjustment button is broken or if the rear rotor has lost a bit of its power.  They're especially good to fly around a roomful of tipsy partiers.

interesting, your trim adjustment or the rotor must be off - mine holds steady when trimmed.....

yep, fun toys!

If it keeps spinning even when trimmed to the max, it might be that the tail rotor is damaged. If the tail rotor doesn't look "right", you can try bending it straight or replace it with the spare.

Those copters can barely lift very small items.  Even just the pin part of a tack completely changes the way they fly, so I'm fairly certain they won't lift a 9v battery.

As for the rotor issues, I have put a new blade on and, even trimmed to the max, it still won't stop spinning until a few seconds after I hold right on the controller.  I think the rear motor must have been damaged in a crash, but I don't know.

Thanks for the advice.

Or maybe the tail boom is twisted. I had that too. I had to straigthen the tail to get it to work properly.

Like I said my 4 year old played with it too and he tended to fly into everything. I was impressed how much abuse that little chopper could take actually. Now and then I had to straighten some things, but it kept going.

My Picco Z actually has a small chip on the main rotor...it still flies but is less stable than before, that's why I bought the 2 other choppers (from a woot off).  They actually fly quite a bit differently, and are all fun to fly.  Heck, I'm just a 35 year old kid who likes RC toys

They seem very overpriced for an RC that only gives you about 5 minuets of actual battery power.

It charges pretty quickly too though.

Hey KenToad , I have a extra controler and a frame with the motor if you want it .

I really appreciate the offer, but I don't think I'm going to bother trying to repair the plastic one.  It seems a lot less sturdy than the foam core one, so I can just keep flying the foam one.

Thanks so much for the offer, though.

I was curious to see how much it can lift so I tested it and it wouldn't even budge.

I tested other things too, the air hog is about as powerful as a small rubber balloon.

I'm curious to see how it flies outside. But I work too late to test it in day light.

A slight wind would probably be like flying in a tornado.
