Title: cabinet fixings
Post by: ratzz on August 29, 2007, 05:19:22 pm
Hi all,

Does anyone know what the fixings are called that sometimes come supplied with flat pack furniture?

they have two parts to them - one pointed that goes into another metal one with a screw type head.

When the screw thing is turned it locks and tightly secures the two pieces together.

I was thinking of using these 'things' for my cabinet but I'm not sure what they are called.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about!?

That class of hardware as a whole is known as "knock down fasteners". I think the items you're describing are commonly called "Minifix fittings" or "Cam lock connectors". There are lots of brand names (e.g. Minifix, Quickloc) so you may need to visit some woodworking hardware sites (Woodcraft, Rockler, Woodworker's Hardware) and look under their Knock Down fittings/fasteners categories to find exactly what you want.

FWIW, the cam lock fittings can be difficult to install. You'll definitely want to buy or make a jig to help with the alignment. If you want the ability to take your cabinet apart, you may find that "connector bolts" and "cross dowels" are easier to install, though it's still helpful to have a jig.

Thanks for that Scott,

You are right -- I've used these things many times in flatpack furniture and a slip could cause real problems. You are also right in assuming that my long term thoughts are for dismantling  the cabinet, and I will look into your other advice for fixings.

Thanks again,
Ratzz
