in case it makes any difference, my cab TV is a Sony Trinitron from 2000 (curved horizontally but flat vertically). No component input.

I would think the mame settings for s-video, composite, or component would be the same for a television.  You'd probably get the best response over in the Monitors/Video forum.  Here's one such thread:
