I picked up this lovely blue cabinet recently. The cab isn't painted blue but is covered in blue vinyl. Not sure if you would call it vinyl or laminate, but it looks great...from a distance.
It is not without its problems. There are a few bad scratches along the edges. Also, where some of the vinyl has come off, it looks like the original owner decided to try his hand at spray painting it blue.
I'd love to salvage the outside of this cabinet but no idea where to start. Is there somewhere I could buy similar "vinyl" covering?

No idea where you could get new vinyl with that color. Does the vinyl have some unique coloring that a color match wouldn't work? Chip a small spot of the vinyl off and take it into a paint shop to color match.
My advice might not be all that great, I've never tried to color match vinyl before.

Not to be a total idiot here, but can buy vinyl at places like Lowes or Home Depot? If so, is it something cheap?

If it is laminate then it will be hard to get a match. I looked at the Wilsonart solid laminate colors and did not see a match but it is hard when you are looking at pictures on the intenet. Maybe if you look at some samples in person you will be able to find a match. There are other suppliers of laminate but not all stores carry a variety. Usually special colours have to be ordered in and it is not cheap. You have to buy a whole sheet and it can be $60 and up depending on the quality of the laminate. Home depot here carries only 5 or 6 colors and patterns. Of the solid colors the only one you can find regularly is black.

if you want vinyl, you can get it at a sign shop or kinkos. Ask to look at the catalog... 3M makes some pretty cool stuff. They might be willing to "sell" you a roll. If they won't sell it to you, you could have a place that has a 3M wholesale account (like an auto parts store) order it for you.
