Title: Dancing Games ?!?!?!
Post by: MilitiaMan on April 22, 2003, 04:16:46 pm
What is the deal with these games?

Anyone with insight please share ... I am dying to understand why people would even be interested in these games.

I recently attended a birthday party for one of my godsons at Adventure Landing and there were a few young girls that appeared to be having a good time on one of these, but I can't for my life figure out why anyone over the age of twelve would want to do this.

Help!

I voted extremely cool, but only if you are a twelve year old girl.

I love Pump it Up (but don't really like DDR). But you do kind of have to be thinking like a 12 year old to really ernjoy it.

I've seen a bunch of guys play these games in the arcade in the local mall...

If that game was in MY arcade in the 80's...... Well, they'd probably be banned for the excessive violence...

The operators would probably get tired of mopping up all the blood on the dance pads as well. I miss the 80's.

MilitiaMan have you ever actually tried DDR?  It's pretty dang fun, dude! I have only tried it a couple times and have mad a fool of myself but it's fun! Especially when playing with a friend of equal talent.  I voted for Extremely Cool b/c that was really the only positive choice on there.  I wouldn't say it's Extremely Cool. But it's funner than you might think :)

Forgot to put in "Pretty meat, but not as good as Pac-man".  So I didn't vote.

I like DDR.  It's great exercise.  How else could your arcade cabinet be beneficial?

It's better with two people than one.  Console versions with battle modes where you can screw up the other person are cool too.

On the PSX, it wasn't an arcade game, but could easily be made to work with a pad is Bust-A-Groove.  Simular to DDR but the background animations really try to get your focus off the arrows.

There was a great review on it from the perspective of a classic gamer.  He thought he wouldn't like it until a friend had him try it.  As long as you try something slower and easier, under 140bpm in easy mode, as your first experience you could get hooked.

I like it, but I prefer to play it on psx in my home because then I don't have millions of strangers staring at me expecting me to do good even though I'm horrible.

Just because I'm bad at a game though doesn't mean I can't like it.  ;)

Now what you want to do is stand by the machine and wait until someone you consider to be really horrible plays, and then (now this is the key part) go right after them and completely show them up.  ;D Now you look good.

I think you need to be

A) very young
B) very female
C) very gay
    or
D) very insane

to play this crap.

That's just like my opinion, man.  8)

You all make very good points -- thx for voting.

The question is:

Will MilitiaWife like this game?

Will she like it enough to stop playing Frogger for 5 minutes?

Wait, SirPoonga, are you replying to MagnetEye's post when talking about Puzzle Bobble?  OH NO!  I'M GAY!  Wait till my girlfriend finds out!  She won't want to play "strip puzzle bobble" anymore.   :'(

I was just being sarcastic.  MagnetEye has a weird view.  My roommate's girlfriend loves playing bubble bobble and puzzle bobble on my cabinet, but so do I!

See, since I goto mature arcades I don't see little kids on the DDR machines which makes me laugh at comments like that.

If your self-conscious like most of us, playing this game is out of the question...

I like watching the girls/ladies/woman play this machine, specially if its a BIG ONES :)

I wonder if girls/woman/ladies watch guys with BIG ONES too.

The negative comments here are about the most illogical things I've ever heard.  They're gay?  They're for girls?  That's like saying that a girl can't enjoy pacman.  DDR is a game with four buttons that you have to hit at the right time.  It requires precision and timing.  It's just a standard videogame (with much more in common with classic games than modern games) and you push the bottons with your feet instead of your hands.  Maybe we shouldn't play cockpit racing games either if there is something inherently wrong with using your feet in videogames.
DDR is a great social game.  Get a group together.  In the beginning everyone is saying, "I'm not doing it, you do it."  Then someone gets on and everybody laughs their asses off at him/her and someone else says, "okay okay, I'll try it." and eveyone laughs their asses off.  In about half an hour even the most self conscious are waiting in line for a go at it.  And it's like Space Invaders.  It never ends, just gets faster and harder.  People get frantic.  It's hilarious.

Yes, I've heard some high schools have used this in gym class.
