I missed it (don't really want to know the details), but apparently Shorthair got da boot in the arcade 1984 thread. First off, how exactly did he get back from banning in the first place, and will he be back?
-
Wow he got banned again? That guy has some serious mental problems. It's almost like he's two persons.
-
Well it sure is going to be a heck of a lot quieter around here now. NTTAWWT
It is weird cause it seems like he really wants to be here, but he just can't stop pushing that big shiny RED button. :dunno
-
Having never had any problem with him, what's the "red button" issue?
-
FWIW I've never had any problems with him either.
-
Having never had any problem with him, what's the "red button" issue?
Figure of speech, the self destruct button. Overall, a month or two of running around the boards like he owns them and never backing down and accepting the fact that he was ever wrong, EVER. Pushing peoples buttons and excluding pretty much nobody in his path including mods, and well, even Saint. It all pretty much ended in the threatening of fellow board members.
Seems like he had some things to offer the BYO community, but obviously that wouldn't make up for the threatening behavior. It is actually really hard to figure out but the general consensus is that he probably just needs some professional mental type counseling. Probably isn't a bad guy overall, just has a hard time fitting in here.
-
He tended to push the PG-13 boundaries quite a bit...in uncomfortable ways. You know, like when one of your buddies says something that is a little awkward and you take a step or two away. ;)
-
Can someone please explain to me just how in the hell anyone can get banned in a ARCADE REVIEW?!? Can someone give at least the a rundown of what was said? Did he call someone a racial slur again?
-
Saint said "intolerance will not be tolerated". Who knows what was really said with that guy.
-
Calling people names that are known to be unacceptable, making physical threats, and then telling the mods to go pound sand. In multiple instances.
They gave the dude a long, long rope and he hung himself with it many times over.
-
Wow, I'm gone for a day and I miss all the fun. I'm definately not going to miss the guy.
 :applaud:
-

He just seemed to be out looking for a fight in that thread. He started criticizing the decision to use the blue buttons to add a credit rather than just setting the games to free play. When it was explained why they went the route they did, he wouldn't just accept the difference in opinion, so a fight broke out. The fight, however, was WAY more heated than it needed to be. Instead of just exchanging thoughts and opinions it became a "You're an idiot because..." type of conversation. Most of it (if not all) was fueled by shorthair's aggressive comments, so the ban came down on him.
I was really confused why he was so angry over something that was calmly explained.
-
Because he's a troll. The whole thing is based around riling people up and receiving attention. I can almost guarantee he's reading this now and laughing. This will be the last time I mention him for that reason.
-
It's funny though, I never figured that you'd have trolls in an arcade forum. I don't like them, but I understand where they come from in the console world at least. I just figured that in the arcade corner of the gaming world that we'd all be a bit older, more mature, and more likely to just get along.
WHY CAN'T ARCADE FORUMS BE MY UTOPIA?
-

IIRC, Saint bans IP addresses. Is that correct?
-
That's easy to get around. He'd have to ban whole ranges to effectively keep someone out and even then it's not too hard to get around.
-

Well he already came back once before, so he either has the knowledge to change his IP (not very hard) or saint didn't actually ban his IP the first time.

It doesn't matter what kind of forum it is... throw in the anonymity of the internet and the fact that there are just sad sad people out there with nothing better to do with their insignificant lives than try to rile people up online so that they can feel smart, important, or "better" than everyone else, and it's bound to happen.
I'm sure there are trolls on the net's most popular knitting forum as well. Unfortunately, try as you might, you just can't avoid ass*^&%$ in life.
-
Does this mean he's banned from the Phoenix area meets too? ;D
Oh and PDB, you don't have to pretend your knitting forum reference was purely random. It's ok to have other hobbies. :P
-
Does this mean he's banned from the Phoenix area meets too? ;D
So you met him then?
I don't remember seeing you at C&C that day :dunno
-
No, I was just aware of it.
-
For the folks who met the man...IS he a man or just a boy? I mean, he usually comes off as some spastic early-teenager...but then once in a while he posts something that indicates that he is a bit older than that. Perhaps the guy suffers from a mental illness of some sort?
-
I thought he said something about coming to California Extreme. Maybe I'll run into him there.
Anyway, you're all a bunch of flippin' idiots for posting in EE when this board is obviously intended for those who actually care about Building your own arcade games. Get a life. >:D

It's not like alot of us have anything better to do during the weekday. ;)

hey don't you judge me!!! It's relaxing, ok. That troll over there just won't stop making fun of my patterns :(

What a loser! Everyone knows crocheting is where its at. ;D

Whatever gets dude the feel of wool on his skin.

Easy guys, he's very proud.

He's an adult. I can't claim to know him, as I only spent a few hours in an arcade chatting, and playing some games. What I will say is that meeting shorthair in person was pleasant enough, and for me at least, the man didn't entirely jibe with his postings to this board. I, in fact, mentioned to him that I thought many of his posts were designed to deliberately needle people, and that I found many of them to be amusing. He seemed a bit surprised at that and said they weren't. Take what you will from that exchange. I've read far too many posts on this board from numerous members that could be described as those of a 'spastic teenager', when I know full well the poster is not one. I'm definitely in no position to comment on his overall mental health.
Obviously he again crossed a line, and Saint made the decision to ban. I didn't see the offending post, but wouldn't second-guess how Saint runs this board for a second. He is probably one of the most fair minded Admins I've encountered on any forum. Please don't misconstrue this as a defense of shorthair's actions.

Whoa. Slow down. You might be next mister dirty mouth

WTF.

We all suffer from a mental illness.
The inability to get out of the 80s, videogamically speaking.
-
I, in fact, mentioned to him that I thought many of his posts were designed to deliberately needle people, and that I found many of them to be amusing. He seemed a bit surprised at that and said they weren't.
Interesting. I always found his posts hard to read. Like Yoda was writing them or something. I thought he was doing it on purpose. I found his latest posts easier to digest.
He seemed to enjoy taking the other side and point out the negatives. No matter what the subject. Thing is, a forum can only have 1 member like that and Chad has seniority.

Like "Tim, do these jeans make my package look small?" :)
Poor, chip on his shoulder ShortHair. May he find himself somewhere in his convoluted, squirrely little mind.

Just reaching here. Is there a way to capture the PC's mac id instead and ban that? That would be a much bigger pain in the neck to circumvent.
-

Eh, not really. It's simple enough just to pop in a new network card. I've also run across some software that lets you change MAC addresses and such. It would make things a little bit more difficult than IP banning, but it is still easy to circumvent.
-
What he ought to do is call himself Tranqhaaaaaaaaair. Then everytime he gets banned he can simply remove an "a".

it's far easier than that. In windows the used MAC address is located in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
The numbers below that key are the network cards (so if you have two cards you'd see 0000 and 0001). Check the value "NetworkAddress". There is your MAC address. And yes, you can change the numbers (beware some ISP check the MAC address for account matching, so change at own risk!)
-
Gee you guys are just helping him get back.
I was hoping for some threads that had more relevance then trash for a little while. Maybe if we all just ignore trolls for a while it will help.
No trolls were harmed in the posting of this message. (Too Bad)
-
Relevance to what? This is EE, partner.

I think that tends to come from the anonymity the internet affords us. When you meet a person in ah... person. There's a certain amount of holding back most people do. It's all for different reasons. For some, if they let their true personality through, they'd get their asses pummeled into the ground. For others, it's a nature of being conniving. For others still, it's a measure of shame, or sexuality, or whatever. The gist is, you act like the person you want to appear to be like when interacting in RL. Most of us have enough self control to accomplish this.
With the internet, those inhibitions disappear or they're altered. The person becomes more like his or herself or they become more like the person they desire to be (eg, a wimp in RL but a tough guy online). It's harder for us to really decide what kind of person they are because we're missing a lot of cues, such as body language, tone, inflection, timing, etc.
Things really start to get interesting when you know the person both online and off. Then you get a better sense of what's happening behind the scenes.
I don't think I've had an encounter with shorthair, but if descriptions of him are accurate, it's pretty obvious he has an altered view on reality. I think his sense of what's right or justifiable is self centered enough that he can't perceive anything but his own opinion as being true.
Just my two cents and I wouldn't even pay myself that much.

There are never more than two. A master and an apprentice.

Yes (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19).

Funny, but sadly true.

I may regret saying this -- normally I do not even enter into any sort of flaming, or even comment in forum topics where flaming is prevalent -- but shorthair sort of reminded me of the Ultimate Warrior; Jim Hellwig/Warrior/Whatever-His-Name-Is-Today...
shorthair was capable of holding a normal conversation - sometimes. However, every now and then... *poof!* completely random and infuriatingly incendiary trolling! For more or less no reason at all.
... and by admittedly vague proxy (just because it has been on my mind and all over the news) he reminds me of recent events with Chris Benoit.
Basically what I'm saying is, yeah most folks on here get along, and even when they don't, at the end of the day it's just words. However, consider this; do any of us feel like we "know" someone on this board? I'd venture that the answer is yes. Know them well enough that you would you meet them in person? Well enough that you'd let them into your home? How can you possibly "know" someone through nothing but text?
I don't know... I feel like I had a point in here somewhere, but I've lost it. I'm just feeling like a bit of a hermit, I guess... travelling alone does that to me.

There are people on here I feel I know to a point. Well enough to invite over to play some games, have a cookout, sure thing!
Personally, I present myself on here as the person I really am. I would say that most people on here are the same way. Us "High posters" as some people like to call it, have shared personal pictures of family and such on here. I like to think of this board as a brother(and occasional sister)-hood.
So I guess my point is, sometimes you get to know people BETTER thru just text than in person. I personally put walls up when I meet new people in person. I get social anxiety, and clam completely up. If I can get to know someone thru email correspondence or forum usage first, odds are I'll act normal face-to-face around them.
I guess that was the point you were trying to work to.
-
I personally put walls up when I meet new people in person.
Can you come help me finish my basement?

Hey, sure thing! Right after you come to my house, and build the retaining wall in my back yard to level my yard. ;D
-
Hey, you're the one who puts up walls. I would make that exchange, though. I get tired of doing all the work on the house/etc by myself.
-

You do realize the wall will be about 8' high at the highest point, would be about 100 linear foot, and each block weighs ~75 lbs, right? ;D
-
I used to lift things heavy enough that I'd throw up afterwards. For fun. I'm a sadist like that.

Actually, now that I read your reply, I realize that actually wasn't my original point at all, but I appreciate the perspective you've offered. :)
Personally, I depend on face-to-face interaction, but then again I've been trained to; paying very close attention to body-language, vocal inflection, kinesthetic response - and to be as internally open and honest as possible. (Pffft... actors. ::)) Even moreso; I've been trained to be wary of text in particular simply because it is so open to "interpretation." That's why writing something like </sarcasm> is ironic and funny. How else are you supposed to tell what exactly someone is saying in their writing? Emoticons? :dizzy:
That said, you do bring up an interesting point. Time and the occasional moment of trust are perhaps the only ways to really get to know someone. I guess the sad thing is; you can never truly know.
All right, enough existential rambling and topic-hijacking from me... besides, it looks like you guys are doing the latter just fine without me! :laugh2:
-

Yes. Yes (and have). Yes (and have).
(note that only the first answer actually applies to trannyq ... in his case, I know him well enough to know that the remaining answers would be thunderous NOs).
-
A couple of people I've met on here (and about whom I would have answered Yes to these questions) later on proved to be jackasses, which has made me a little jaded. I know it's wise to have some skepticism when you're talking about the online world, but IRL I'm fairly trusting (very low "Shardian walls") of people, so it kinda sucks.
-
I've met a lot of people from forums, including a few here, and I have to say only a couple have ever proved to be real dillholes IRL. None were BYOAC people.
-
I met Chad once. He was a real anal jerk who thought he knew everything. i thought it was weird he brought a bag of Cheeto's with him, along with some comics to meet me, but whatever. I believe he ran a comics shop, but I was hardly listening to him after a point. Just so everyone knows, here is what he looks like:

Chad didn't hang around 'em long enough. Like roaches, they learned to survive by hiding their dillholeness.
Or Chad's such a dillhole that they seemed "nice".
I'm voting that it's a combination of the two ;D
