Title: Control Panel Overlay Help
Post by: SirPeale on April 20, 2003, 10:40:14 pm
Well, I'm building a new control panel for my cabinet.  It's going to be made out of and old entertainment center I've got sitting here collecting dust.

All the cuts are going smoothly, and everything's looking fine.  I'll post some pics in a bit.

My question/request is this: how the heck do you use Adobe Illustrator?  This has to be one of the more confusing programs I've used in a while!

I'm comparing it to Adobe Pagemaker, which I'm quite comfortable with.  I would figure, when you resize an object, that you would still be able to see the guides on the rulers when you resize.  You don't.

And then another problem I'm having is the alignment of objects.  Say I draw a circle.  I can pull a guide down from the ruler, but can't get the circle to sticky to the guide.

Any hints, or perhaps I should just let one of you gurus help me?

Go to the downloads section of this site and scroll down to Frosty's Vector Tutorial.  That will get you up to speed with Adobe Illustrator as quickly as possible.  Maybe even faster.

I've read it completely to the end, but it still does not help me with the problem of aligning objects.

Try using freehand its much more user friendly than illustrator.

The copy I have is regrettably incomplete.  Everything but the help files.

I think I'll just dig out my copy of Corel Draw.  It does have .eps support, IIRC.

You could also download an evaluation copy of Paint Shop Pro.  It supports vectors pretty well and can import/export most file types.  I used PSP for most of my artwork.

Here's an illustrator link that I have bookmarked.  I'm not sure where I got it, probably here.
