Since I already posted it on my personal website, I'll just throw out a link. Let me know what you think!

Cool starting point for a cab. The art is cool, but generic enough that most people won't be able to figure out what it was.

That's what I was thinking. Sometime in the future, I may want to strip it all off and do something custom, but I think I'll leave it for now and just make something similar for the new control panel.

Excellent starter cab there Kenny. I took a look at your CP layout and I would recommend that you have separate credit buttons for each player. There are games that require this.
Welcome to the hobby

I was planning on having one of the coin slots assigned to each player. A credit can be "inserted" by either putting an actual coin in or by pushing on the appropriate coin eject button. Is there a reason why that wouldn't work?
-
That is perfectly doable. Just install a microswitch that will be pressed when the coin return is pushed. Then connect it in parallel with the coin mech sensor switch onto the same input contacts on your U360. Finally map that input to be the credit in MAME and you are good to go.

Very cool cabinet and for everything you got, a good deal for a mame cab. I think the cabinet artwork is perfect for a themed MAME cabinet. A custom CPO and you will be all set!
-
I really dig the cab. I don't really see much of a reason to change, unless you start to get sick of the green/yellow scheme (personally I think it looks cool).
Take your time, enjoy the process and make sure to take lots of pictures!

Well, I just ordered all the controls...time to watch the mailbox ;D

Very nice. I'd leave the paint alone, and do my best to make the CP artwork match.
I love apartment builds. I remember driving my wife crazy with messy projects on the kitchen table / balcony.
Good luck with it.

Looking real good.
I had the same experience with the hole saw on MDF.
I found it does a lot better if you drill a bit, then pull the hole saw out to let it sling the dust off. then go in again. Very time consuming.
I definitely use the paddle bit for small holes such as the buttons.
The paddle bit works much better than a twist bit on real small holes too.
I have a black & decker kit of paddle bits. 1/2 inch through 2 inch bits.
Very handy tools. Gets used a lot on my hobbies and my around the house projects.
Good luck with your project, and I like the picture of wolverine (I think) in the background.

Yet another update...not many pics since I didn't have a camera during most of the work:

I wired up the control panel and coin mechs last night and fired up some sf2 and ninja turtles with my roommate...it was awesome! I'm so glad I decided to build this thing

Well this project has actually been done for awhile, but I've been too busy playing it to post an update ;D. I got frustrated trying to make a bezel that fit right, so I just trimmed back the original bezel...good enough for me really. The only thing I'm still waiting for is for my artist friend to finish my control panel overlay. The power button is halfway up the back on the left side, and the master volume knob is right next to it. I just gutted some cheap PC speakers for the amp. I managed to make the entire control panel flush without ever having used a router or having cut plexiglass before. The front end is Mala with the U360 plugin. Here's a link to some pics:

The screen looking weird is just because of the refresh rate, but you already knew that :P

linky no worky :(

Power surge toasted my webserver...hopefully I'll have it back up later today. Stupid cheapo surge protectors

Ya, originally I was planning to replace all the artwork at some point, but then I decided I liked it and that I'm lazy. So now once I get the control panel overlay, it'll be totally done

So it only took me 3 years to get off my butt and do it, but I finally got the control panel art for my cab printed by Scott at Mame Marquees. I scanned in the original control panel overlay and had an artist friend use it to make something that matches the rest of the cab and conforms to the new control layout. It came out great:
