Title: minimum size horizontal monitor to play verticle games that fits in cabinet
Post by: y2k600f4 on May 31, 2007, 09:17:32 pm
I am in the process of looking for/buying a standard 2 player arcade cabinet which probably will have a non-working 19" arcade monitor. It will be a MAME conversion that will play both horizontal and verticle games. I have not yet decided if I will replace it with an arcade monitor or a TV. My question is what size monitor would generally fit in an 80s cabinet that currently has a 19" ?? Also how will vertical games play on a 19" horizontal ? I want to see what my options are e.g. upgrading to a larger monitor or replacing with a working monitor of the same size. My concern is the playability of vertical games on the smaller monitor and if I go with a larger...what is the probability of it fitting ? Thanks.

This is a pretty general question, but I doubt you'd be able to go over 25" in most cases.  Unfortunately, there aren't many arcade monitors between 25" and 19".  I think a 27" would either not fit or look too big IMO.  You could also look into a rotating monitor setup (pretty much the best solution, but difficult).

Thanks for that info. I would be happy with a 25" arcade monitor, I did not really want a 27" but wanted to possibly go the TV route due to $$$$. But if I can get a cabinet cheap enough I might just go for a good 25" arcade monitor. I have read some posts that said verticle games played on a horizontal 27" will result in about a 19" or so size, close to the original. I am guessing a 25" monitor will yield something close, acceptable for vertical games. I am just trying to cover my bases before spending $ on a cabinet. If I am way off pls let me know !! I am in the process of tryin to make a deal on a midway cab (arch rivals basketball) and an atari tempest. Hopefully between the too units and a new 25" monitor I can get something to work.

don't over look the other way as well, i have a 27" TV mounted vertical in a small cab (21" wide) vertical games look amazing and horizontal looks normal width (21")

the TV ends up taking up most of the space on the front of the cab, but doesn't look to large IMHO

27" flat screen CRT in my vert Dynamo. It has a big sub in the base, and is so in-your-face for shooters. I love it!  :) 25" wouldn't be bad, either.
