Title: Chase H.Q cab to MAME
Post by: HE-MAN on May 12, 2007, 12:27:23 pm
Hi everyone!

I have a Chase H.Q cabinet that I am going to make a MAME cab of instead. But what kind of things do I need to do this? Should I use a Opti-PAC? If so, do I need another PAC for the buttons, gear-shift and the gaspadel?
Im going to chance the will in the cabinet to a "Pole Position" steering wheel that I get from (http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html)

IN SHORT: I need device that could handle a stearingwheel, buttons, gear-shift and the gaspadel and maybe a breakpadel to my MAME cabinet.

Glad for all help I can get!

If you had a Pole Position cab you could use an opti-pac, but your game has a 270-degree analog steering wheel. When it comes to analog controls the options are pretty limiting. AFAIK there isn't an interface to handle analog inputs.

The most popular option is to hack a Microsoft Dual Strike pad. That should give you all the inputs you'd need for your cab. The majority of these hacks I've seen are used for Star Wars yokes. One such page is here:

You could hack into the buttons like people do on console controllers or use a seperate ipac/keywiz.

Chase HQ should make for a decent generic racing cab. I'm thinking about doing something similar in the near future. Make sure you start a project thread so we can see how it goes.

I converted a 1976 LeMans to MAME. The problem is the amount of games it can play. Driving games consisted of some combination of the following:

Steering Wheel
270 Degree or 360 Degree

Pedals
Microswitch or Pot
Some games have a brake pedal
Some games have a clutch

Shifter
Some shifters have a turbo button
Mame has difficulty switching between Hi/Low inputs from a shifter depending on the game

Buttons
Some games need no buttons while others need several

Mine had a 360 wheel with microswitched buttons. I added another button on the CP to play a few additional games, but the amount of games it could play accurately was very low. Like, maybe near 10. The amount of games it could play acceptable was around 2 dozen.
