A guy with an Arcadeshop in Germany has implemented a very nice "Guess the screenshot"-game.
www.arcadeshop.de
Have a try and leave your name and favorite arcadeforum :)
I don't think that many users from USA will order their parts in Germany so I guess this is not to be understood as "commercial".
You have ten seconds to select the name you think the screenshot is from. After 3 wrong answers you loose and can start a new game.
You also can insert the link-code into your own homepage so your visitors can play it, too (adjust the colors to match your design):
<script src="http://www.arcadeshop.de/screenshotgame.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"><!--
var sg_bgcolor='080808';
var sg_textcolor='FFFFFF';
var sg_linkcolor='FF7417';
var sg_linkhovercolor='F6F04A';
var sg_buttonbordercolor='FFFFFF';
var sg_h1color='CC3300';
var sg_h2color='FF7417';
var sg_scrollbarbasecolor='';
var sg_scrollbartrackcolor='';
var sg_lng='de';
--></script>
<a href="#" onClick="screenshotgame();">Arcade Screenshotquiz</a>
Have fun !! :cheers:

Hi Nexus ;)

Hi Nexus ;)
I am very good with multiple choice tests. ;D I had never even seen half of the games.
-
11 was my best score so far. But - to be honest - I really don't know much games that good. Most of the score was achived by looking at the game and then looking at the given names. Some are clearly not the game....the rest was randomly chosen :D
-
12 here.
-
I played three times. The first I got a 31. The second, 15. The third...50!
I'm ranked #4 overall! :woot
There seem to be a lot of screenshots in there. I only had a few repeat. The one thing that threw me off a bit were the non-US titles for some games. It's Ring King, Dammit!
Thanks for posting.

I'm really sorry about this. I often tried to find out both American and European titels and bracket one of them. Whenever you found a screenshot without accordant (American) titel then let me know please.
By the way there are 1230 games to guess :o Of course it could be more, but I didn't want to record every sequel to keep the quiz resolvable.
-
After 4 runs through, I've only found a handful of games with regional differences in names. Ring King/King of the Boxers was one, Fast Freddie/Fly-Boy is another. I had both Pang! 3 and Mighty Pang! come up, but when I checked there is no US equivelent. The first two games were known as Buster Bros. and Super Buster Bros. in the states.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. It was a lot of fun. 1230 games should keep me coming back for a while :)
*EDIT* Just remembered another regional variation. Crush Roller was known as Make Trax in the US.
-
Thanks a lot!
I checked with KLOV and found these details:
Pang - Buster Bros.
Pang! 3 - Buster Buddies
Super Pang - Super Buster Bros.
Mighty! Pang - seems to be a world name
Ring King, Fast Freddie & Make Trax are added. I'm sure there is much more to emend. Please don't hit me ;)
-
"Traverse USA" AKA "Zippy Race" is known as "MotoRace USA" in North America.
-
Added. 3 names in a row for the same game, that's a lot.
BTW I'm planning a lower level at the beginning which will increase the more points you got.
-
I finally scored 33. I usually cant get over 20, due to the amount of obscure games and games from the 90's. Most of them time I'm guessing but surprisingly am guessing correctly. ;D
-
Salvation is near ;)
Soon you will be able to choose from a certain period: 1988 and below or 1989 and above and - as hitherto - the complete mix of all games.
-
Ha, 50. That should keep me on the board for a while. ;D
If it weren't for the million schmups that I've never seen before, I could do better.
-
One more fixer-upper. Is it:
Shuffleshot
The Fairyland Story
Dark Edge
Black Widow
Captain Commando
How about none of the above. It's clearly from Punisher. I guessed Capt. Commando since it was a Capcom game with similar mechanics from the same time period. It was my last incorrect answer.
How about adding a missed answer counter. It could even be done as "lives left".

I got that one too. I guessed fairyland story and got it right. ;D
-
You're absolutely right, sorry for that dumb mistake. There were 2 entries for Fairyland in the database, but 1 with the wrong picture.
Yes, I've already thought about a life counter and probably will be added soon.
-
Very cool! I posted a linky for it on my site as well to get it more exposure.
-
We're going to add some FLASH gimmicks in the next days. Here comes a small preview of what i mean (http://www.retrooffensive.de/bb.html). Have fun :)
-
There is a huge update (thats why i had to delete the current hi-score, the all-time hi-score still exists):
1. Life counter added to the upper left corner
2. Before starting the quiz you can choose from which time period the games shall be.
3. Level increase: 2 choices of answers at the beginning, +1 choice at 25 points, 50 and 75 points
4. Some flash animations added, which are shown before level increases and at certain points you got, just to say "Congratulations" ;-)
Enjoy it!
(please report any bug to me)

Got a 32 playing games since 1989. Those 90s shooters all look the same.
The intermissions are awesome. After playing a few times I'm guessing they're random.
Few minor English mistakes..
The first screen shouldn't read "Games from 1989" since that means they are ONLY from 1989. It should probably be "Games from 1989 and newer" or maybe just "1989-present"
Also, "Well!" should probably be "Good!" or "Great!"
Thanks again for putting all the work into this!
-
Got a 33 first try. This is fun, thanks!
-
Fixed. Thank you, Crowquill.
-
Got past question 4 and got an error message
Unknown Error - when I started it back up I began on question 5. I noticed that when I hit 10 there was a flash animation - is that the case for question 5? maybe that's the source of the error.
Edit - while typing this and watching the Q10 flash, I clicked "Go On" and this came up
Again! Cookie could not be saved to your computer or you start the game with another browser. Unfortunately this fact can be used to betray, thats why you are blocked for 60 minutes.
So now I'm blocked. At least I can say I got 100% for the questions I was given.

Sorry, this "feature" was added for a long long time to. It was intended for a kind of contest mode and should garantuee fair play. Anyway, I'll think about this pain and a solution...
I'm scared. Haze from Mameworld got 652 points. That means he is going to blast my database (there are approx 600 - 650 entries per period = approx. 1250 entries total)
-
This is great. So far I've gotten to 44. Nice way to pass the time at work, between browsing the BYOAC message boards.
-
just got 40 on the first try. a bunch of those were guesses tho..
-
You guys suck! Mind you I'm not great at it, but I got a respectable 16th place. ;)

Haze used to be the head mame dev, he probably worked on or added the driver to a great deal of those games. NOBODY will beat him.
-
I think I broke it, it ran out of answers, gave me a blank answer, and no screenshot.
Gained points: 1229
btw the following are basically the same games, but different regions. Some appear twice.
bust-a-move / puzzle bobble
phantasm / avenging spirit
ninja kid 2 / rad action
storming party / lsa squad
area 88 / un squadron
light bringer / dungeon magic
shaolin road / kicker
lethal thunder / thunder blaster
mad gear / led storm
bermuda triangle / world wars
major title - listed as IGS?? it's by Irem
yes, I was bored.
-
How long did it take you to go through 1200+ questions?
-
about 30-40 minutes.. most of them could be answered in <1 second. It's really too easy, it rarely even puts games in the same genre on the same page, and for ones I didn't know I could guess if I knew the manufacturers of the games listed due to the distinct graphical styles / resolutions that were often used.
If there had been a question with the various different Vs Fighters (Xmen Vs Sf, Xmen COTA, Marvel Vs SF, Marvel Vs Capcom etc) on then I would have probably failed, because I couldn't tell you the differences between them but the difference between a fighter, a shooter, an 80s maze game and a sports game are obvious...
-
Agreed.... except for the two that tripped me up, most of the possible answers were wildly different from the source screenshot too. A question with a screenshot of a boy throwing papers on a bike, with one of the answers being Paperboy and another being Space War isn't exactly difficult.
