So I picked up an old Japanese Cocktail game that a coworker rescued from a neighbor of his. Originally I thought it was an "IPM Invader" game based on this website: http://www.geocities.com/ipminvader/ (http://www.geocities.com/ipminvader/)
Once I fired it up I found out it is actually Galaxian or at least a bootleg of it. Yep, actually worked! It has these funky 2 way leaf spring joysticks that swivel on a vertical rod. The buttons are actually not leaf switches - they are some sort of microswitch.
So now I am trying to figure out what to do with it. Does anyone sell parts for these type of cocktail tables? Seems like Midway parts dominate all the arcade parts sources I have found. Would a jamma conversion be viable using a fingerboard? Also, what is soldered on to all the switches in this thing?
Some pix:

More pix; note the green connector in the 5th pic down; that is what attached to the boardset - that isn't jamma is it...? The board is actually a double decker type...
-
Very cool find. Is the game called Space Beam? That is the only listing KLOV has with Nanao as the manufacturer. They don't have any pics or anything of the game.

Damn... how do they expect a person to play a game like that for very long? Very crafty Japanese indeed. Design a game that can only be comfortably played for 10 minutes.
-
I've played Crazy Climber on one, which actually works very well in that position. I don't see how you could play a game that required mashing the shoot button though, as you said.
-
I believe Nanao may have just manufactured the monitor and the plaque on the outside just refers to that. The boardset does seem to come from IPM who later became IREM, as the boards in this machine look very similar (but not identical) to the boards for IPM Invader that are shown on the website dedicated to that machine.
-
It's not that hard to play at that angle. You just fire with your thumb.
And to the original question of JAMMA.... NO this is way too old to be JAMMA.
-
This seems to be the early model of the later Nintendo cocktail cabs, with the vertical CP as well. Very similar design with only minor differences.
Makes sense, being both of Japanese origin.....
-
They all used that general design. Taito as well...
-
bump - So it seems that this is identical to early Taito cocktail cabs as well as Nichibutsu cabs.
Anyone have a source for parts for these cabs? I found corner glass clips from a source in the UK, but that is about it.
Anyone know what is soldered on to the microswitch (and all the other switches for all buttons and joystick switches):

thats an electrolytic capacitor, probably for some type of 'debouncing' to prevent double button presses
